Classic blues, 18 Dec 2003
This is an excellent album, which was often used by high end audio equipment retailers in the mid-1990s to demonstrate hi-fi equipment due to the superb quality of the recording.Mighty Sam Mcclain is a little known blues artist who, like his Audioquest label mate Robert Lucas, has a considerable live following in the USA but little exposure outside the live blues circuit. However, his songwriting, guitar playing ability and vocal skills make this album a "must listen" for blues afficionados, particularly those who value well written, passionately delivered tunes delivered in an unusual and unique style. The sleeve notes reveal McClain's gospel background, and there is an element of that influence in the album, these being songs of hope and love rather than the more stereotypical "the devil made me do it" blues outpourings. They are none the worse for that though, and the album is both entrancing and inspiring. Bruce Katz's piano and Hammond B-3 organ contributions add greatly to the atmosphere of the recording, as does Bennie Wallace's superb tenor sax playing on Got To Have Your Love, track 5 on the album. Michael Rivard's bass playing and Lorne Entress's inspired drumming compose the perfect rhythm section. Highlights? Got To Have Your Love, the awsomely dynamic I'm Tired Of These Blues and the driving boogie of What You Want Me To Do stand out, but this is an album in which every song is a minor classic, with none of the "filler" tracks so often found on lesser blues releases. Thoroughly recommended.
