Synopsis
A vicious alligator named Ramon, who was flushed into the city sewer as a baby, survives to become a 32-foot-long menace who devours animals and people alike. Ramon's so huge because of the steady diet of dead pets - treated with growth hormones - that he's fed on for 12 years. Now the tremendous brute is angry and looking for revenge. Only detective David Madison knows of Ramon's existence, and it is his task to prove to the rest of the city that a tropical beast lives in their midst. Veteran screenwriter Sayles' script finds the perfect blend of comedy and horror, making this an entertaining romp through the sewers of Chicago.

4.0 out of 5 stars A gold, plastic buck of popcorn entertainment., 30 Mar 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Alligator [VHS] [1980] (VHS Tape)
A thumping monster movie that used to be the crown jewel in any eighties kid's video night. Should really be a cult item on par with Repo Man or Assualt on Precinct 13. This follows a baby alligator's rejection into the sewer by an unloving family. His growing pains (all eighty foot of him). After that he eats loads of people. So the mayor sends a crazed bounty hunter after him. Not to mention the grizzled cop and gorgeous scientist. Big guns, flashlights that rarely work and people being chewed in half, this baby has everything you'd expect from a huge reptile under the city flick. The plot takes some swallowing as do half the cast, but the narrative is always scrappy and the direction suitably ragged around the edges. Not everyone's cup of tea but hey... why drink tea when you can see a gigantic beast eat people in a sewer. Probably the best of the many Jaws rip offs. Makes a good double bill with any of the above movies but especially Q- The Winged Serpent. Which is unfortunatley absent from the internet shelves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Realistic film about the very real threat of a giant alligator., 10 Aug 2008
If people insist on throwing unwanted pet alligators in the toilet and also eating hormone enhanced fast food also being processed and flushed into the same sewer system you should expect mutated alligators, and rats. This film shows how a modern city would deal with the increasing problem of giant reptiles attacking people. Well made with great special effects and snappy dialogue it should have won oscars. Watch it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic 80's horror movie with all the trimmings!, 22 April 2000

This review is from: Alligator [VHS] [1980] (VHS Tape)
Main reason I'm writing this is because I've just been to see Lake Placid, or is that Lake Flacid! Man, what a let down. Pretty good cast, except for the gran from the Golden Girls, but one of the worst scripts ever recorded.

Anyway back to Alligator, yeah so this time you have to suspend reality indefinitely and direction wise things could have been tighter, but hey it's got Rob Forester in it!

It's a load of fun, loads of people get eaten and it's actually quite suspenseful.

So watch it.

Well, I quite enjoyed it anyway. Ok, so it's a tacky piece of hokum, and your sense of reality most definitely needs to be switched off but Alligator is a nice, tidy little 80's... Read more
