Product Description

From Amazon.com

Guns N' Roses' career could be neatly summed up in a lyric from their song "Pretty Tied Up": "I just found a million dollars that someone else forgot." Indeed, GNR satisfied a grassroots hunger for bigger-than-life hard rock at a time when legions of alternative bands were enjoying their first burst of overweening critical attention and commercial cachet. The last and most spectacularly successful band to prosper from Hollywood's burgeoning 1980s Sunset Strip glam-metal scene wrapped a couple decade's worth of sometimes tired clichés around a tight, assaultive musical attack that enticed millions yearning for poor role models. And if their edgy songs often blurred fantasy and reality, the best of them had a street-level honesty that couldn't be denied. A de facto greatest-hits collection culled from performances recorded around the world, Live Era best documents the early, ferocious performing prime of GN'R's original quintet on its first disc, leaning heavily on their landmark Appetite for Destruction album to great effect. But the second volume often chronicles the band's steady decline into bloated self-parody and neo-Vegas "professionalism."--Jerry McCulley

CD Description

The six years these performances represent include all lineups of the band until it broke under the weight of Axl Rose's temper and ego. Guns' unflinchingly rebellious music addressed life on the streets and among the band's most incendiary material were songs about the school of hard knocks ("Welcome to the Jungle"), drugs ("Mr. Brownstone"), and mortality("Dust n' Bones"). The only time this dangerous edge becameworrisome was when the band cut "I Used to Love Her", a catchy number that attracted the ire of many people because of its flip treatment of abuse in a relationship.
Much of G N' R's oeuvre may have been fueled by the snarling guitars of Slash and Izzy Stradlin (and later Gilby Clarke), but later songs were impressive epics swept up in passion, includingthe larger-than-life "November Rain" and the lesser-known but equally impressive "Estranged". Beneath the tattoos and snarls, Guns N' Roses also had a more sensitive side that canbe heard on the bittersweet "Yesterdays" and this package'sonly previously unreleased number, the transformation of Black Sabbath's "It's Alright" into a piano-driven solo piece sang and played by Axl Rose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have your own private concert, 23 Feb 2005
By Mo "f1mo" (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This album is fantastic. The sound is so crisp and clear, it's like having your own personal Guns N' Roses concert. The recording is excellent with all the instruments sounding perfect. It is brilliant to hear Slash using different guitars (Gibson Les Paul, his 12 string double guitar, etc), Matt beating the life out of the skins of his drums and cymbals (each cymbal can be distinguished), Duff pulling the strings of his bass and all the other band members doing their backing stuff. As one can expect from great live acts, each song is different to the album version with great guitar riffs which are extended and unique. Axl screaming his tonsils off on some of the songs like 'Sweet Child O' Mine', the ending is just so great.
It definitely helps if you have seen GnR Use Your Illusion Tour in Tokyo on DVD, as when these songs are listened to, you can imagine exactly what you have seen on the DVD. It would have been ideal if the drum solo and guitar solos could have been included onto the album.
The 2 disc CD is excellent with most of the great songs present and LIVE.
Although the title of the album suggests live recording sessions from 1987 - 1993, the live concerts more sound like recording from 1991 - 1992, but that's probably credit due to the sound engineers as this album sounds like one whole concert.
This album is a MUST for any GnR fan, but if you like your rock music and familiar with GnR, then this is a great album to hear possibly one of the greatest bands doing their stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant album by a brilliant band, 21 May 2001
The live album really epitomises what Guns N Roses are (or were) about. With Slash free to solo throught the double CD, and with Axl Singing out as usual, this CD is very pleasant to listen to. It has all of their old tracks, and is good for someone who doesn't know much GnR and wants to hear some. Their Black Sabbath cover of it's alright is brilliant and leads into an extra long version of November rain, with a three minute piano solo intro, and a slightly altered regular intro. A lot of the songs from this album are from Appetite For Destruction, and Despite what people say, a lot of effort is put into it, with a fantastic result. A great album worth it's money

5.0 out of 5 stars GnR as they SHOULD be heard., 6 Sep 2000
By legobod@yahoo.com (South East England) - See all my reviews
I was a massive GnR fan way back when & this album just brought all the tracks back to life. There is so much energy here w/Nightrain, Mr Brownstone, etc just rocking out. There is the superbly diverse blues playout to Move To The City &, of course, Slash at the fore on every track. The Estranged version here is one of my top ever tracks. PD!
