2.0 out of 5 stars Danzig goes industrial, but fails to produce his best work, 4 Jan 2002
There's not alot you can say about Danzig that hasn't already been said. His music is dark and brooding; he was the singer with seminal horror punk rock band the Misfits; he sounds a bit like Jim Morrison; and he writes some great songs. All of this is true. While he also takes himeself very seriously, which is alone enough to put some people off, listen to songs like She Rides, Mother, Devil's Plaything or Dirty Black Summer and you are hearing some great examples of dark, menacing rock.

And he has gone ahead and experimented with some not so straight-forward material particularly his Black Aria instrumental opus and this one, Blackacidevil, which saw him jump into the industrial camp with both feet. For this no one can criticise him. What he did with Blackacidevil was a welcome attempt to spice up the angry/brooding blues formula which had become a little tired after four releases. The problem was that he failed because he lost that extra, slightly threatening dimension 'something's out to get you' feeling which he gave to virtually every song since he first began in the Misfits.

The release which followed, Satan's Child, was probably the one he should have produced at this point, but even it only managed to hit the heights of the previous outings in a handful of songs.

Maybe Danzig is missing the input of his former, (and ridiculously named) band members John Christ, Eerie Von and drummer Chuck Biscuits after they parted company after Danzig IV. But my advice is stick to the first four efforts, particularly one and two, to get a real flavour of the man at his best then wait for his next outing expected in early 2002 when many fans will be hoping for a return to form with or without his industrial mixing machine.
