Product Description

CD Description

The "outtakes" album is all too often treated as a dumping ground for excess studio tape or contractual obligation. While this collection of rarities makes no effort to refute either charge, it is wide-ranging, informative and uniformly rewarding nonetheless. Spanning the band's career, DEAD LETTEROFFICE is culled from a variety of albums and other sources. It provides a novel perspective, playful and occasionally downright silly, with friendly, self-effacing liner notes byguitarist Peter Buck.
The range of production varies greatly, too: some outtakes, such as "Burning Down", are given full treatment. In fact, "Voice Of Harold" is the complete backing track of "Seven Chinese Brothers" with a bizarre vocal take by Stipe (not that the one they kept on RECKONING wasany too straightforward). Covers abound, including the opener "Crazy" by fellow Athenians Pylon, a drunken, clumsy takeon Roger Miller's "King Of The Road" and yes, Aerosmith's "Toys In The Attic", as well as three Velvet Underground songs. The most striking and inspirational thing about DEAD LETTER OFFICE is that no matter how much effort the band expends, every track displays an innate genius and an intimate level of musical communication.

3.0 out of 5 stars A collection of out-takes with a few gems., 3 May 2000
By A Customer
This is R.E.M. from the early days and predominantly showcases material that didn't make such albums as 'Reckoning' and 'Life's Rich Pageant'; but also featuring some covers and some material from as far back as 1981.

Much of it is well worthwhile, having that 80s indie sound, rhythmically very strong, particularly on tracks such as 'Ages Of You' and 'Carnival Of Sorts(Box Cars)'. The covers indicate their influences, with three Velvet Underground numbers and, less impressively, an Aerosmith one. Some of the material, though, was shelved for a reason, as some honest liner notes by Peter Buck reveal.

This is not only recommended for R.E.M. die-hard fans but also to those tentatively backtracking to their earlier material (but be sure to stop off at 'Document' on the way).

4.0 out of 5 stars Some covers, some junk, and some gems., 14 Aug 2001
The album's a great collection of rarities from their early years. The last five tracks are the bands debut ep 'Chronic town' and they are very good indeed.

What a great album! The Velvet Underground songs are fabulous but my personal favourite has to be "Voice of Harold".
