Product Description

Product Description

While not their strongest recording, Aerosmith's self-titled debut gave a taste of the musical path that the band, and much of the rest of hard rock, was to follow for the rest of the 1970s and well into the 1980s. Although the awkward social commentary of "Movin' Out" and the swinging cover of Rufus Thomas's "Walking the Dog" have largely been forgotten, two standards emerged from Aerosmith: "Dream On", a prototypical power ballad with its keyboards and string arrangement, and "Mama Kin", which contains one of the most recognisable riffs in hard-rock history. Though Aerosmith would record better albums--both before and after their drug-induced implosion--their debut serves as a kind of road map to much of post-60s rock & roll. --Genevieve Williams

5.0 out of 5 stars What a rocker!, 15 Oct 2001
By corduroyangel@aol.com (Kendal, Cumbria) - See all my reviews
I love this album. It still twiddles all the right bits in my brain twenty years on from my purchase and nearly thirty years on from it's inception!

I've seen some fairly scathing reviews of some of these album tracks and cannot understand why. The comparisons to the Stones are unfair, and betray laziness. Yes, Tyler's mouth bears a passing resemblance in size to Jagger's, and he was a fan of the Stones but he was also a big fan of James Brown, whose funky, blues influence is, if anything, felt more than anyone else's on this album. Certainly the lyrics were more amusing and more inventive than the Stones'ever were, laced with crazy American slang and drenched with a sleaze that can only be described as funny. Well, what else would you expect from a good time, rhythm and blues rock band? Aerosmith deliver this and more.

My personal favourites have, and always will, include Somebody, Write Me A Letter and One Way Street. The vocals on this latter track are quite simply fabulous, with Tyler at his most feline. This is formative listening for all rockers... put it on and boogie 'round the bedroom before you leave the house... you'll feel better for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aerosmith ROCK, 11 Oct 2000
By greg@pigs-arse.co.uk (ROTHERHAM ENGLAND) - See all my reviews
This is one of my favourite Aerosmith Albums to date. It is not as popular as many of the others, but the heavy guitar songs are contrasted with the slow stuff. When I heard this I thought WOW, and I've like Aerosmith ever since. I would recommend this to anyone

4.0 out of 5 stars It's Aerosmith, but not as you know it, 6 Sep 2007

To the UK public, Aerosmith might as well not have existed until the 1980s, when Run DMC got them to feature on a cover of one of their own songs. But you can forget all that stuff they've done since. The early albums of the 1970s are the real deal. If you listen to the first track of this 1973 debut, you'd be hard pushed to identify it as an Aerosmith song. This is r&b in a heavy rock style, chunky guitars, basic, right down to forgettable song titles like 'Somebody.' It's solid right through though. Like many debut albums, it doesn't stand out in terms of style. The band had yet to forge a sharp identity; they achieved that on their third album, 'Toys In The Attic.'
As is also often the case with hard rock bands, their breakthrough US hit was the one ballad-like song, 'Dream On.' This, though, is too intense to be lumped in with the sort of song you'd get on a 'power balad' compilation. Otherwise, it's satisfying rock all the way, at a time before Steve Tyler's voice had developed its hoarsenes. The album closes with a cover of Rufus Thomas's 'Walking The Dog,' an r&b staple that they do well. A very good start.
