Amazon.co.uk Review

Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) was Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox's debut offering as the Eurythmics, following their departure from The Tourists. The partnership went on to be one of the most successful UK songwriting collaborations of the 80s, going on to win 1998's special Brit Award for lifetime achievement as well as being involved in numerous acclaimed solo projects. While Sweet Dreams is not the duo's finest hour, it certainly sets the premise for what was to come from this long and enduring partnership--Lennox with her hypnotic vocals and deliberately androgynous style and Stewart's experimental and yet essentially mature pop melodies. --Ronita Dutta

CD Description

1983's SWEET DREAMS (ARE MADE OF THIS) is actually Eurythmics' second album, but 1981's Krautrock-influenced IN THE GARDEN was never released in the US and made minimal waves in the rest of the world. Thanks to two striking videos and somecanny self-promotion on the part of androgynous singer Annie Lennox, this was certainly not the case with this much-improved follow-up.
The hypnotic drone of the title track and the ticking, pressurized "Love Is A Stranger", were enormous radio and video hits around the world, but much of the album belies the synth-pop tag those songs earned. Dave Stewart plays bluesy slide throughout, and the respectful cover ofSam and Dave's "Wrap It Up" gives Lennox a chance to showcase her soulful growl which would, on subsequent albums, replace the chilly soprano featured here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavenly synth sound, 4 Dec 2002
By Pieter "Toypom" (Johannesburg) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
Eurythmics followed up the fragile and ethereal but somewhat inaccessible In The Garden with this album of pure pop genius. The early 1980's saw an explosion of synthesizer-driven sounds and there were other duo's too, like OMD and Yaz(oo), but Eurythmics outlasted them all. Sweet Dreams provided Eurythmics with the commercial breakthrough in its shimmering masterpieces such as Love Is A Stranger and the dreamy title track. The video's of these two are superb too. Not all of these are flowing pop songs though; there's also the ethereal I've Got An Angel and the enervated experimental Wrap It Up, plus the more soulful outings I Could Give You A Mirror and The Walk with its great trumpet solo. Besides the aforementioned hits, my favorites also include the atmospheric Jennifer (reminiscent of Belinda on In The Garden) and the elegant This Is The House with its Spanish spoken intro, its instrumental flourishes and its mood of sadness. It's true that not every single track here remains as memorable as the ones mentioned, but this album certainly deserves five stars for its melodic and lyrical greatness.

5.0 out of 5 stars THEIR BEST ALBUM - SURELY TIME FOR A REMASTERED REISSUE?, 16 Oct 2001
1983's "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" was Dave & Annie's 2nd album as Eurythmics, coming after the more experimental "In The Garden" in 1981. Everyone will be familiar with the singles "Love Is A Stranger" & the hit title track. However (IMHO) this is one of those albums where every single track is very good, with no filler. Particularly excellent are the uptempo cover of "Wrap It Up", "The Walk" (moody), "Somebody Told Me" (scary) & "This City Never Sleeps" (ethereal).
The early 80's electronica style could be cold at times, but was superior here to the following album "Touch" (great singles & some forgettable tracks) and the pointless remix album "Touch Dance". Later albums went in a more straightforward pop/rock direction, and were warmer (but a tad blander) as a result, the exception being the slightly patchy but mostly brilliant "Savage".
Being a huge Eurythmics fan who bought every 12" single from this album to their last, I feel the time is right for the whole catalogue to be remastered & reissued with all the single B-sides as extra tracks. Possibly some of the 12" mixes could be included as well, although these might sound slightly dated to younger ears! Buy this, "Touch" "1984" & "Savage" & you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect example of how music should be done..., 25 Oct 2002
Type in "Sweet Dreams" on any search engine, look it up in any music journal or even refer to it during a conversation and (more often than not) the word Eurythmics will appear alongside it. This was the song and album title that became synonomous with the duo, perhaps because it represents an artistic high for them. The song content, despite one or two songs sounding slightly dated, is wonderful; a combination of witty lyrics ("Love is a Stranger"), synthetic dance ("I've Got An Angel"), a beautiful voice ("This is the House") and (most importantly)- pure originality (one cannot help but think of the title track). Younger listeners may be distracted by the bizarre cover or the coldness of songs like "Jennifer", but for me, this collection of songs should be in the top 10 of any list of best 80's albums and in the top 100 greatest albums of all time. I felt that there were only 2 problems with this album; firstly, the albums' cover photo could've been slightly larger, and secondly some more-dance orientated material wouldn't have gone amiss. Dave and Annie had done it: top 10 singles, a number 1 album and fame and fortune. Then they did it all again- only this time it was better...
