Product Description

CD Description

Free of his contract with Beggar's Banquet Records after his previous two records, 1982's DANCE and 1983's WARRIORS, had sold only to a small but devoted cult, Gary Numan formed his own label, Numa Records, and released the first of many DIY indie efforts. Many fans consider BERSERKER the beginningof Numan's most fruitful artistic period, an era where the synthesist/guitarist was able to record his own music without interference. Musically, the album builds on the Kraftwerk-like electronic sheen of his last few albums. Similarly, the title track, "The God Film" and "My Dying Machine" continue Numan's lyrical preoccupation with the bleak, dystopian works of authors J.G. Ballard and Phillip K. Dick. The biggestsurprise is "A Child With The Ghost", an uncommonly heartfelt farewell to ex-Tubeway Army bandmate Paul Gardiner, recently dead of a drug overdose, that's probably Numan's most emotional song. This reissue contains four bonus tracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real music by that bloke who sung about cars, 20 Jul 2001
lost under the stickly sweet nastiness of the mid eighties Numan created one of his finest albums, musically and lyrically from the title song to the last Numan dishes up another paranoid and weary review of the world, the man is amazing, the album magnificent, buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational stuff, 11 Dec 2004
I was inspired to search for "Berserker" after reading a review of Dada Pogrom's album "Apocalypso". Although the two artists are similar in their genre, it is really clear how Gary Numan has inspired and paved the way for contemporary artists, such as Dada Pogrom. "Cars" was a classic, but "Berserker" has the emotional landscape synonymous with nu dark wave, which I happen to like a lot. This is now on my list of "must haves".

4.0 out of 5 stars Berserker = Great, 15 May 2004
This CD is an all-time favorite of mine. It has a very 80's sound, but stands above most of the other material from that era in its continuity. from beginning to end, there's not a dull moment on "Berserker" - Well, "Pump it Up" isn't all that great now that I think about it... Strong songs are "Child With A Ghost," "The Secret," "Cold Warning," "My Dying Machine" and "The God Film".
