Product Description

CD Description

During the most captivating segment of Elvis Presley's phenomenal 1968 television comeback special, Presley reunited with original band members Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana. To film that segment, Presley and the group performed two sets before a rapt studio audience. A generous selection of performances from those concerts became available on video in 1985under the title "Elvis: One Night With You", but RCA waiteduntil 1998 to release TIGER MAN, a single CD of the performances.
Anyone who has ever seen "One Night With You" willneed no convincing to buy TIGER MAN. These performances quite simply capture Presley at his best, singing with a joy absent from much of his '60s output. At the same time, Elvis is clearly giving it his all, as if trying to undo in one brief set all the damage a decade of safe, mediocre movies had done to his image. The only drawback--and it's a minor one--is that Presley wrests the electric guitar from Moore early in the set, thus depriving us of a master instrumentalist's tasty licks. On the bright side, Presley's rudimentary guitar playing reveals a side of the King previously unheard on disc: Elvis as garage rocker.

5.0 out of 5 stars King reclaims his crown, 21 Aug 2001
By A Customer
By the late 1960s Elvis was clearly tiring of the increasingly formulaic hollywood movies and the correspondingly poor soundtracks he was being forced to record and was ready to return to music with a zest and eagerness not seen since he came out of the army (and unfortunately not to be seen again). This period produced two real highlights - the 'Memphis sessions' from which would come possibly his finest recordings (Suspicious Minds, Long Black Limousone, Kentucky Rain et al) which balanced emotional intensity without falling into the Vegas schmaltz of later recordings. The catalyst to get him back into the recording study was this concert. Listening to it you can feel Elvis' nervousness at the outset (remember this was the first time he'd been in front of a live audience for the best part of a decade) but as the concert progresses you can feel his confidence grow and and by the time he hits 'One night', 'Tiger Man' and 'Tryin' to get to you' (for me the definite highlight of the concert) it's like he'd never been away...

3.0 out of 5 stars ***1/2. Diehards will love it, casual listeners may not, 16 Jan 2005
By Docendo Discimus (Vita scholae) - See all my reviews

There are some real gems scattered throughout this primarily acoustic June 27, 1968 performance.
The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, and Elvis Presley sounds like he is having a really good time. Good for him, but his performance is suffering. He flubs songs, forgets lyrics, banters excessively with the band and the too-noisy audience, and appears to treat the entire show as a super-relaxed jam session rather than a performance.

Presley does catch fire on occation, though, and there are several worthwhile moments here...a great "One Night" which would have been even better if the audience would have shut up, a ragged but powerful "Trying To Get To You", and a pretty tough "Blue Suede Shoes" among them. And the fact that there are no backing vocalists and no string orchestra is a very welcome change!

Anyway, I like most of it. And I'm sure that most serious Elvis fans will love it. For everyone else, it's simply too disjointed and incoherent, especially when compared to the original Elvis TV Special album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Second Informal Segment from the NBC Comeback Special, 12 Jun 2005
By Mr. J. Hadwin "John Hadwin" (England, Liverpool) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Second "Informal Segment" recorded for the NBC 'Comeback' special, recorded at 8pm on the 27th June, this is possibly the weaker of the two shows. But is wonderful nevertheless.

It's needless to say that Elvis is in the best form of his life, raw and energetic everything he recorded around this time is a classic. Of cause the "Informal Segments" were the highlights (musically) of the TV Special, but the Special wisely cuts out the opening, with Elvis' initial tentative efforts of "Heart Break Hotel" and "Baby What You Want Me To Do". Elvis then strains his way through the obligatory "Heartbreak Hotel" and jokes his way through the obviously not loved "Are You Lonesome Tonight".

But the show starts with the a reprise of "Baby What You Want Me To Do". Fantastic. The bluesy slower version of "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Love Me" are a excellent, the Power that then propels "One Night" and "Trying To Get To You" make them possibly the highlights of his career. "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" - a rare miss from Elvis' earlier career - is given new light, and captures some of the magic of "Trying To Get To You". Sadly Elvis can't remember the words to "Santa Claus is Back In Town" and doesn't give "When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold" his full attention (although check out the beautiful harmonies on the ending), and "Blue Christmas" is far from an Elvis classic. Elvis finishes off with a rock through "Tiger Man" and a pretty (though slight) "Memories". A fabulous concert, not given 5 stars as the "Memories" album is better value.
