Product Description

About the Artist

If classical music moves to the beat of the conductor’s baton, then Manfred Mann is the orchestrator of much memorable music in the fields of pop and rock. He’s been building bands, picking great songs and mixing styles ever since the early 1960s – and even if statistics told the whole story, a hit-list of 22 UK chart singles, six EPs and 12 albums would be impressive enough.

In an era when classic rock and its practitioners is finally being given its due, Manfred has no plans to hang up his keyboard. "Count Basie rocked till he dropped, Beethoven rocked till he dropped, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald…it doesn’t seem that odd that people should play music for their lives, if that’s what they do. Pop, rock and jazz is the music of the 20th century, certainly the last half, and the best music will last. I started off being a musician and I’m carrying on being a musician. As long as people will pay to see us do gigs, I’ll perform."

5.0 out of 5 stars Manfred Mann hits the 80's, 3 Mar 2003

This is largely an original album of Manfred Mann EB originals. The main cover version is a Sprinsteen song 'For You'. Recorded in 1979/80 this is mainly a follow up to the album Chance including tracks not used in the previous release. The quality you can hear here is such that you will agree the songs needed to be released.

Lead vocals here is shared with Chris Thompson again taking the main share. Saxophone is supplied by the very talented and generally gorgous Barbara Thompson (not related to Chris). There can't be any better reason for buying now and enjoying well produced slick 1980's style AOR.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignored gem of an album, 21 Feb 2008

Mann used a bunch of different musicians on this album but stayed pretty much with the excellent Chris Thompson on vocals and Barbara Thompson on sax. John Lingwood replaced Geoff Britten on drums too.

Lies through the 80s speaks for itself, written by Mann being a cynical looks at 80s culture. For You is another brilliant cover of a Springsteen song, first released on Springsteens 1973 Astbury Park album. Fritz the Black is an instrumental. No Guarantee was written from inspiration found on the guarantee card for a washing machine of all places. Quirky but brilliant. The other tracks are also well worth a listen.

The material on this album is up to Mann's previous efforts although the Earthband were considered passe by the mainstream establishment when this was released in 1981, with punk well into it's spiral of doom and the new romantics coming. That's probably why this album is a largely forgotten classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars For old time's sake., 23 Sep 2009
This review is from: Chance (Audio CD)
I bought this album, having not heard it since the 80's when I played a casette on my walk to studies. The ones I had purchased earlier were Angel Station (my personal favourite) and Watch, but I remembered Chance's stand-out track For You, the saxophone playing by Barbara Thompsos, the great vocals by Chris Thompson and others and of course the synths of Manfred Mann. Not essential, but I'm glad I found it again. Now where's Out Of Africa?
