Live album are always tricky to do. Its success depends on whether the band sounds good live and if the lead vocalists' voice can hold without the support of a studio technician. Thankfully, Simon le Bon's voice is just as great live as it is on studio work. He has a great presence in the band, is a superb front man and possesses a fantastic voice of which, thankfully stays constant throughout the entire album. 'Arena' opens with their fast paced 1983 single 'Is There Something I Should Know?'followed by 'Hungry Like The Wolf', both of which contain large amounts of energy and sounds great live. The only song that sticks out on the album is the classic 'Wild Boys'. It sticks out because the songs is not a live performance but rather a the studio produced version that was later released as a single. Having a studio song slap bang in the middle of a collection of live performances breaks the flow. The second half of the album is a contrast in theme compared to the first half. The first 5 tracks are upbeat energy tunes whilst that last 5 are very intense; mostly taken from ' Duran Duran' (then bands first studio album back in 1981) and 'Rio' (their second album, 1982). Each songs is pleayed and sung beatifully and truely shows the bands talent as the tracks are not easily ones to sing. The bands taste for fashion is shown strongly in the inlay card with each member photograped on his own make-up and hairspray clad in true New Romantic style. 'Arena' shows clearly Duran Duran's talent for giving live performances and proves that at the time of the release they truely did deserve the title 'Greatest Band On Earth'.

An 80's classic, but if you didn't hear it then do it now. This is what real songwriting is all about. Timeless classics that take us into the 21st Century and beyond!

The album was recorded on Duran's 1984 Arena tour, when the group were the biggest band in the world.
Everything about the album is dynamic to the extent that you almost feel that you're a part of the audience.
From 'Is there something I should know' to 'Careless Memories' the listener is put through a roller coaster of sounds, that even eighteen years later still sound fresh and alive.
The fact that tracks like 'Rio' and 'Girls on Film' were ommitted and 'The seventh Stranger', and 'New Religion' were put in their place, totally justifies the fact that Duran were more than comfortable to air their hits and also their album tracks.
This is a superb album from the then five members of Duran Duran, and is the pinnacle of their success!
