Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Musicologists looking for evidence of Neil Young's connection with the avant-garde likes of Sonic Youth need look no further than this uncompromising soundtrack to Jim Jarmusch's film Dead Man--the first post-punk western to make any sense at all. The music here is scattered and fragmentary, and performed mainly on electric guitar. Though Young's instrumental musings work well in the film, this soundtrack album will be of interest mostly to hardcore Young fanatics (for whom the feedback epic of "Weld" was too brief). The film's most accessible piece of music came during the opening credits, with Young blending acoustic and electric guitars to great dramatic effect. Unfortunately, it's not on this CD. Rent the video. --Steve Appleford

4.0 out of 5 stars great if you liked the film, 30 Jan 2000
By karsam@mailexcite.com (toulouse France) - See all my reviews
This is 50 % of what makes the film trully fantastic. And if like me you know every reply and every scene (having seen it umpteen times) it's very evocative. I know of only one other film that manages to combine film and music in that way : ascenceur pour l'échafaud. Would have been perfect if they had included the soundtrack from the credits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dead on Dead Man, 18 Mar 2009
By Tim (Oldbury, West Mids, UK) - See all my reviews
I loved the film - not the usual Hollywood fare - and the music was a big part of it. Unlike with most soundtracks, there is no obvious formula applied, and the soundscapes Neil Young wrings from his instrument absolutely complement the story; in fact they are kind of part of the story. Consequently, the cd is not your run of the mill listening experience. Listen to it on your own, in the dark. Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars my first neil young album, 17 Mar 2009
Having watched the film a few times some years back it struck me how well both sound and vision came together ... i wasn't a huge NY fan but I was intrigued by the 'noise' element he created and how he went about it ... i'm guessing that there was a collaboration of minds and although the two forms are integral they are also quite distinct ... they tend not to match up in terms of sequence or in length ... on the cd version there are sounds which (to my ears) sound like engines churning, which I don't think are on the film soundtrack ... has NY merged in his own noises to give the album its own flavour? I read somewhere that this album has been quite influential to certain noise/lofi/dirge bands ... I love it because it's so different from anything else & like the film itself deserves and rewards frequent plays ...
