Product Description

CD Description

This collection is an excellent mixture of Brenda Lee's bigpop hits and the more overtly country-oriented material that the Georgia native began recording in the late 1960s. The 40-track ANTHOLOGY VOLUMES 1 & 2 isn't complete--Lee had over 50 charting pop and country hits from 1960's "Sweet Nothin's" into the 1980s--but the two-disc set is well compiled and hits all of her high points. Though best known for "I'm Sorry" and "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree", Lee was a varied, sensitive singer, able to handle sorrowful ballads and sassy rockers with equal aplomb, approaching her material with a verve that belied her surprisingly young age. (Lee was only 11 when she recorded her first single.) The casual fan probably won't need anything beyond this collection, but those intrigued by these early blends of country twang and rock & roll will find plenty more where this came from.

5.0 out of 5 stars From rock'n'roll to country, 7 April 2003

(#1 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Brenda Lee was one of the most successful singers of the early sixties, when she was still just a teenager. As the sixties progressed, her music mellowed, with fewer rocking songs and more ballads. In the seventies, she switched to country music, thus returning to her roots. All these aspects of her career are represented in this fine anthology, which begins with Jambalaya, a song that Brenda covered when aged just eleven.

Brenda had many hits in America and around the world, but the hits were not always the same in each country. Speak to me pretty, Brenda's biggest UK hit, was not even released as a single in the USA. Generally, Brenda's biggest American hits were ballads, while her biggest British hits were rockers.

All her big American hits are included here, but Speak to me pretty is missing - not surprising, as this is an American compilation. Fans who want that song can find it on a British compilation.

Among her classic pop hits to be found here are Let's jump the broomstick, Rocking around the Christmas tree, Sweet nothings, I'm sorry, Emotions, Dum dum, Fool number one, All alone am I, As usual, Coming on strong and Johnny one time.

Brenda made several country albums in the seventies and early eighties. This anthology does not do full justice to this aspect of her career, but Nobody wins, Big four poster bed, Rock on baby, Tell me what it's like and Broken trust show just how good she was at it.

Brenda has been poorly served when it comes to CD releases, especially the later stuff, but this is the strongest compilation of her music yet released.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brenda Lee - Is still magic, 21 Feb 2005
This double CD covers Brenda Lees singing talent from 1956 to 1980, the time when Brenda was a big hit on both sides of the atlantic. this CD has most of her hits. Brenda Lee at her best, jambalayou on the bayou will get your feet tapping. Brenda Lees version of 'lets Jump The Broomstic' is still the best. From solid rock to slow country type ballads like 'Johnny Onr Time' are included. All the British hits are included on this CD. If any one wants to re-live or find out why Brenda Lee was dubbed 'Little Miss Dynamite' give this CD a whirl. There is also songs that were not released as singles either here or in the USA, all the tracks do showcase this amazing singers great talent.
