Product Description

From Amazon.com

Best known for his early rock hits such as "Splish Splash," by the early '60s Bobby Darrin had pretty much abandoned rock and recast himself as something of a finger poppin', tuxedo wearing, youth-camp version of Sinatra. Surprisingly, it worked. While he lacks Frank's chops, the swinging "By the Sea" and "Mack The Knife" are two of the best latter-day Sinatra imitations, and there's no denying his light touch on "Lazy River." He even had the guts to take on "Guys and Dolls," a song identified with the Chairman. As good as this album is, it only gives a fraction of Darrin's talents. For a broader picture (including his late 60's transformation into a jeans wearing folkie), check out Rhino's Darrin box, As Long As I'm Singing. --Steven Mirkin

5.0 out of 5 stars Second hits volume has few hits but high quality, 13 April 2003

This collection and the companion Splish splash contain forty of Bobby Darin’s finest songs from his peak years. Purely in terms of hits, this is weak, containing only seven American hits, but anybody who judges the quality of the music by the size of the hits alone misses out on a lot of great music. And so it is with this collection.

Mack the knife, an American chart-topper, is the biggest hit here, while Beyond the sea, a translation of the French song La mer, also reached the top ten. The other American hits here are Lazy river, Clementine, Bill Bailey won’t you please come home, Artificial flowers and Christmas Auld lang syne.

Among the unsuccessful singles here are covers of Black coffee (Peggy Lee), What a difference a day makes (Dinah Washington), Skylark (Dinah Shore) and Don’t get around much anymore (Duke Ellington), all done in Bobby’s unique style.

This volume, with a few up-tempo songs and a lot of ballads, is generally mellower than Splish splash, which contains a lot of up-tempo songs and a few ballads. Taken together, the two volumes present a comprehensive collection of Bobby’s A-sides from 1958 to 1961, plus (on Splish splash) three later songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's the music that counts, 13 Nov 2008

This review is from: Mack the Knife (Audio CD)
From his pre-Capitol and post Rock 'n' Roll days comes a youthfully brash and vigorous Bobby Darin in what would be his first successes in a field that was ruled by Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, Vic Damone etc. Some of the tunes follow a set pattern: soft, almost timid start, slowly increasing volume, the band shifting from two-beat to four, several key changes and a wild, rousing, all-out finale: "Mack the Knife", "Up a Lazy River", "Beyond the Sea", "Down with Love" and "Clementine". (It's not for nothing that from among these tunes Robbie Williams and other part-time crooners take their pick; they will still appeal to an audience who may generally find music by the more established names a tad too bland). But there is also the softer, more romantic and bluesy Darin (more sophisticated perhaps, but always heartfelt) with typically lush orchestral backing in covers of other artists' hits. They didn't turn out to be hits for him, but do form an everlasting proof of the fact that Darin was a great all-round singer who could tackle almost any kind of material in any setting. For one so young a remarkable achievement (but he had had his fair share of disappointments and bad news about his parentage and health). If you're curious where a good deal of Michael Bublé's, Jamie Cullum's and Robbie Williams' inspiration comes from: here is the answer.
