Product Description

From Amazon.com

The first two albums from Better Than Ezra were recorded as low-budget demos and released on tiny indie labels, even though the second one, Deluxe, was leased by Elektra and turned into a platinum smash. The third album, Friction, Baby, is the trio's first with a big budget and an experienced producer (Don Gehman of John Mellencamp, R.E.M., and Hootie & the Blowfish), and it crystallizes Better Than Ezra's identity as a mainstream pop band relying on catchy hooks, straightforward lyrics, and top-40 arrangements (which in 1996 meant grunge guitar). Kevin Griffin, the group's singer/songwriter/guitarist, has excellent pop instincts, and the 13 songs on Friction, Baby are as pleasurable as they are unadventurous. --Geoffrey Himes

5.0 out of 5 stars Better by the Minute, 28 Jun 2007
By Kittycat63 (England) - See all my reviews
Better Than Ezra are a band from New Orleans who are woefully little known in this country but had massive success with their album Deluxe in the 90s in America, although I think later on they became somewhat overshadowed by bands like Bush who seemed to be promoted and pushed to the forefont more and who were never out of the music press, but Better Than Ezra had some of the best music from that period that I had ever heard. I was lucky enough to see them live at a small club in New York in the mid 90s and they were incredible. I have been in love with their music ever since I acquired Deluxe, and Friction Baby is also an excellent album. There isn't one bad track on here, and I can listen to it all the way through without wanting to skip less listenable tracks that many albums often have and that, in my experience, is very rare! Kevin Griffins' drawling, silky vocals are, once again, lush and full and still some of the best around, and the musicianship all round is jaw-dropping. My favourite tracks are King of New Orleans, Rewind, Normal Town, Scared Are You?, Desperately Wanting, WWOZ, Speeding Up To Slow Down, and at CH. Degaulle, etc, all of which are as good as each other and it would be hard to choose between them as to which is a favourite, although on first listening Rewind really jumped out at me! Better Than Ezra's sound, to me, is timeless and they sound as fresh and sparkling as they ever did. If only there were more music like this in the charts instead of the, more often than not, mediocrity which clutters it up nowadays! Better Than Ezra should be much better known in this country ... they certainly deserve to be. This album proves that BTE are still one of the most talented young bands around and that they have lost none of their natural, New Orleans tinged sound. They have a unique and unmatched quality which makes them stand out amongst many of their peers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Check these guys out.., 7 July 2004
Very good album with two stand-out tracks in 'King of New Orleans' and 'Desperately Wanting.' It would be easy to place their genre and style as being late eighties / early nineties and comparisons with the likes of Gin Blossoms, Toad the Wet Sprocket and pushing the boat out a bit - Soul Asylum and Matchbox 20 but these guys have evolved with the times. Put simply, the only band whose music I would buy with first listening to an album. If I were to recommend / introduce the band to somebody it wouldn't be this album - their latest offering 'Closer' is a better all-rounder and 'Deluxe' which has such a raw, under-produced sound to it with a life anthem in 'Good'. That said I've probably played 'King of New Orleans' a 100 or so times and my record collection wouldn't be complete without it.
