PACKED with the torch song style ballads she's known for!, 12 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This album was Vanessa Williams' second outing and as such is far more confident an album than her first, she herself once saying that the songs on this album were written for her and therefore better suited to what she can do, and she's not wrong!Though the up-tempo stuff is now suffering the way most dance music does from being nearly a decade old, the faster tracks are spaced perfectly to avoid it sounding too emotionally down-beat, because this album is PACKED with the torch song style ballads Vanessa Williams is best known for, including the single "Just for tonight" and her most famous hit to date "Save the best for last", though this hugely popular track is, to my mind, just one of the highlights of the album. After the title track comes the seventies tinged "Running back to you", basically an attitude song with a pumping beat and who-do-you-think-you-are lyrics, a few more soulful tracks later comes "Save the best for last", followed by "What will I tell my heart" a stunning cover version of the old Dinah Washington song. Done in a style that suggests a smokey nightclub for a movie she had a small role in, this track was considered so good it was included on this album, and I can't help but agree! A couple more up-tempo tracks later (one of which, "2 of a kind", is an unfortunate low point on what otherwise is a consistently good album) there are MORE big ballads, nestled in the middle of which is another great up pop track "One reason". If you're not into sentiment and ballads, then Vanessa Williams probably won't be your cup of tea, however it has to be said that it's the kind of thing she does best and she does it very very well.
