Amazon.co.uk Review

British East Africa, 1923. Harry Rudbeck, an ambitious army officer, wants to build a road to bring the outside world to the backwater town where he is posted. Struggling to find ways around Foreign Service bureaucracy, he relies on his resourceful African clerk, Mr. Johnson. But when Johnson's can-do attitude runs afoul of British law, Rudbeck must make a painful decision. The film is deliberately paced, and the topnotch cinematography, art direction, and soundtrack all conspire to immerse you into the sweltering heat of East Africa. Maynard Eziashi gives winning performance as Johnson, a man so intent on becoming important that it destroys him. Like many of director Bruce Beresford's movies, Mister Johnson is a clear-eyed look at the way a collision of two cultures can lead to tragedy. Rudbeck must ultimately face the fact that his own ambition leads to the death of his friend, and Pierce Brosnan (as Rudbeck) and Beresford refuse to sentimentalise the man at all. Among Beresford's films, this is much closer in tone to Breaker Morant than to the kinder, gentler Driving Miss Daisy. --Geof Miller

5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic, 5 April 2008

Shot on location, the Jos Plateau of Nigeria this is a faithful adaptation of the novel which I read before seeing the film. Johnson was the kind of southerner detested in the north of Nigeria, an antipathy which eventually led to civil was in 1966. This is a faithful recreation of colonial Northern Nigeria and contains a sad moral dilemma.

5.0 out of 5 stars A film much overlooked, 17 Oct 2006
By G. H. Jones "Moody Mad" (ELY,UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This film first came to my notice as an offering on Satellite TV. From the word go it was obvious this film had been overlooked and/or underrated by the critics such was it's impact.
Maynard Eziashi is excellent as Mr Johnson, the black but white suited clerk to Mr Rubeck (Pierce Brosnan). He portrays a black man who is proud to be British and even looks down on his fellow Africans as "trash". Anything English (including whiskey) is "just like back home" eventhough he obviously has never been to europe.
His guile in ensuring funds are siphoned from various government funds in order to finish a road is as endearing as it is ridiculous. In the end an incident with a store owner (Edward Woodward) ensures a sad conclusion but perhaps the beautiful music at this point reminds us of the man they called Mr Johnson.

4.0 out of 5 stars An elegant job, 9 Sep 2003
The movie is a really good one and shows that Brosnan is as very good actor as anyone else when the director is fine. How a good job could possibly be unknow?Believe me it's worth it.
