HASH(0x9015be28) out of 5 stars It's a TEXTBOOK 2 Jan. 2013
By R. Goldenflame - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
Be advised that there has to be some bias in what I am writing here, although I am trying to avoid it. I have been attending one of the author's many centers just as a member of the public for several months now (although I have never met him) and the book was made known to me so I could take a course they're going to offer that will be taught by one of their clerics. That aside, its first few pages made it clear that this is not a walk in the park. Plenty of excellent books are available that introduce Buddhism in a very fetching way. This is not one of them, and it doesn't strike me as a book to 'introduce' Buddhism. It's a deeply researched textbook on the subject, written by an author with an encyclopedic mind who writes just like any professor: in a very detailed, but often dry way. He means to educate you, not charm or bedazzle you, and that will require work, but you will learn. Starting with the life of the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, he takes you into a philosophy, psychology and cosmology in Buddhism that will undoubtedly require more than one reading to fully fathom. When he goes on to conclude this survey with a report on the development of its many congregations today, he presents what I believe is the book's central lesson: Buddhism is an experience far more than a faith. Just like deep water scuba diving, it cannot really be known unless you go there. This is a book that can give you the directions.
HASH(0x90d0ee10) out of 5 stars In depth analysis from one of the great minds of Western Buddhism 7 Dec. 2015
By Stephen Sloan - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
This book is not meant as an introduction to Buddhism but rather as a careful examination of the central focus of Buddhist life. While the analysis is inciteful, it should not be taken up lightly and without adequate support. For those with the proper preparation, the contents of this book may easily open up new insights.

HASH(0x8fc3f5b8) out of 5 stars More of a textbook than a dhrama book 19 Oct. 2011
By star lake - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
There was entirely too much background information for this book to have been of any assistance to me. I just wanted a clear understanding of the Three Jewels and ended up very confused.
