5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Tec Fiction told with style, 20 Aug 2003

(REAL NAME)
As a crime fiction afficiando, I'm always pleasantly surprised to find an author I never knew before. Bill Pronzini generally won't be found on the shelves of the local and that's a shame because he's a superb thriller writer, and these two Nameless mysteries in particular are superb.

Writing like Chandler and Hammet in the modern world, Pronzini takes us on a journey through the twisted, labarynthe lives of Nameless' clients building twist upon twist into a satisfying tour of murder and hidden motives.

The central character, the nameless detective, is a superb creation: the PI stripped to the bone. He has no real personal life, and the clever quirk of never revealing his name (similar to Hammet's Continental Op)is less irritating than one might otherwise believe. We learn snippets of who he is: his Black Mask obsession, for example, but these glimpses serve only to illuminate his humanity and leave us wondering who he really is. And its a trick Pronzini pulls off in style.

The two stories in this volume, Labarynth and Bones are gripping reads that speed through to their superb climaxes. In Bones, Nameless' obsesion with the pulp PI magazines comes to the fore as he investigates the suicide of a pulp crime writer, while in Labyrinth a relatively simple bodyguard assignment pulls Nameless into family intrigue and an ever increasing bodycount. Superlative, gripping crime writing in the best of pulp fashions for the modern age.
