2.0 out of 5 stars Old Babe, 16 Aug 2005
By A Customer
On the positive side, it is well written and easy to read with some keen observations. However, overall a disapointing read, and slightly painful and trite near the end. New China is actually China in the 90s, which is about 100 Western years (we can probably blame the publishers for the title). Foreigners = Americans, which is probably why UK publishers are delaying publication. If you are interested in reading about a young American women's time hanging out with a miniscule representation of Beijing ren (melange a trois artists who can afford to live in suburbs, Chinese women who date westerners, Chinese indie art movie maker with perfect English)then you'll probably enjoy this book. It probably doesn't reflect how 99% of Beijingers live their lives and is hardly an insignt into the new China. Should be entitled: American Babe Hanging out with Foreign Chinese, but that is not such a catchy title, is it?.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hao!, 29 Jan 2007
If you've been to Beijing in the last 10 years this should ring a few chords. Essentially the memoir of an American girl in China trying to fit in, Rachel - or Ruiqiu as she's known in China - has a great eye for description and a humorous tone.

She certainly doesn't come off as the patronising ex-pat abroad, but the cultural gulf between east and west and misunderstandings provide plenty of light humour over what is a more reflective work that is first apparent.

Recommended whether an old "China-hand" or if you've just got an interest in this fascinating country
