Product Description

Product Description

Spanish food has taken the culinary world by storm, and the food of northern Spain represents the best the Iberian peninsula has to offer. These regions produce wonderful raw ingredients, which the home cooks of Spain have long used to create classic dishes like Romesco and Alioli, and modern-day chefs have rediscovered in order to bring Spanish food to the forefront of the gourmet world. This is the first book to bring northern Spanish food to those outside the Iberian peninsula and to present the recipes in a simple and accessible way. All the dishes are designed for cooking in your own kitchen and ingredients are carefully explained. Divided into three sections, The Food of Northern Spain discovers how the Spanish eat and their passion for good food. The second section includes the store cupboard basics and the best Spanish wines to accompany different dishes. The final section features over 150 recipes. Every recipe stays faithful to the Spanish version (but the author has made small adjustments for the non-Spanish cook) and has introductory text that illuminates the history of the dish, when the Spanish might eat it, different versions or useful tips. With wonderful reportage photos taken by the author and beautiful finished recipe shots by Jean Cazals, this title is both an insight into the cuisine of the area and a unique cookery book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indespensible Luggage Item!, 10 May 2007
By Jon D "Jon in France" (South Vendée, France) - See all my reviews

We take an off season break (ie when it's raining but inexpensive!) in Catalonia each year with friends. I bought this book after one such and it now comes with us on each trip.

Jenny Chandler has filled the book with some excellent, often very straight forward, recipes ranging geographically from Galicia on the Northwestern tip of Spain, right across to Barcelona. She does a good job of explaining regional differences in ingredients and technique and enlivens the book with plenty of relevant anecdote.

In addition, the illustrating photos are of very high quality and Chandler provides a clear and concise guide to the wines of the region that makes a very welcome change from just buying Rioja.

Strongly recommended for anyone interested in Mediterranean and Southern European cookery.

I was very excited when I spotted this book in my local Deli. I spent many a month in northern Spain as a child and these recipes bought happy memories flooding back. What's more the meals are hearty yet healthy and I now feel 'strong like de Bull' (which pleases my wife immensely). Oh and the pictures are great too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Yum!, 5 Jan 2006
Not just another 'cook book' thank Gawd! Spanish food has never looked or tasted so good. I was bought it for Christmas and can honestly say that it's changed my eating habits….. for the better! Expert, but easy to follow descriptions; make this book a must for all food lovers. Although we visit Gran Canaria often, we are now planning a trip to Northern Spain. Thanks 'Jenny Chandler' for a refreshing, informative Christmas present!

1.0 out of 5 stars Good food Jenny, but Leon is not Castille
Good recipes, shame that some of them are linked to the wrong region.
I guess Jenny will never read this but it'd be good if it was put right on next editions of this book... Read more
