This book goes far further than an 'introduction to MIDI' - it explains the varying formats (such as General Midi, Roland GS, Yamaha XG, etc.) and goes into great detail about the science behind the format and it's evolution over time. A great read for anyone interested in the science behind digital music, though it gets a bit complicated towards the end!

This is the best written book on MIDI I've come across. In fact, I found it so easy to read and understand that I assumed it was just a beginners guide, so I read several other books afterwards - only to discover that while they made MIDI seem more complicated, I didn't learn a single thing that wasn't already described (far more elegant) in "MIDI for the Technophobe". Yet another excellent book on music technology from Paul White!
