Product Description

Product Description

This new "Aerofax" title is a fitting celebration of one of the most successful British aircraft of all time. It first flew during World War 2 and a few hardy survivors are still airworthy into the 21st Century. The Meteor served with 16 overseas air forces as well as with the RAF so there is enormous scope for modellers to produce examples in a wide variety of liveries and markings replicating aircraft from literally around the world.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well-researched but a lot remains to be written, 12 Jan 2009
By AS BUNTING (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I purchased this volume to supplement the coverage of the Meteor in Putnam's Gloster volume and was pleased at the depth of original research conducted by the authors.

Following the expected chronological review of versions there are chapters detailing night-fighters and tugs, foreign service, trials and research aircraft, structural design and contracts. My favourite section was a candid account of life on front-line Meteor squadrons by an anonymous RAF officer...

The photographs are well-sourced and original and there are colour spreads of the roundel bars worn by the operating RAF squadrons.

Whilst the book shows evidence of a great deal of research and a refusal to rely on previously-published ``fact'', the text leaves me somewhat disappointed. It is error-free and ticks all the boxes but stills seems like the tip of the iceberg. For example, we are told of the handling problems of the PR. Mk 10 but nothing is volunteered as to whether these inhibited operations. Foreign operators are all covered but in little depth. There are no details at all of actual Meteors in action save a few sentences about Australian ops in Korea.

Still a good one-volume summary of this little-understood aircraft but far from the ultimate reference.
