5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 7 Jun 2004
I just bought the book based on a rave review in the Sunday Times that said "To go for an interview without having read this book is an opportunity missed".

To say that the book is packed with practical advice is probably underestimating the benefit of the book. While it only took me an hour to skim read it, it has given me a lot to think about.

In attending interviews, I tend to rely on my good interpersonal skills to blag my way through. But the book talks about particular question types and interview techniques that employers use. I've got a lot of work to do to prepare for "competency-based interviews", but this book has made a real difference in opening my eyes to the kinds of questions that I obviously have not been sufficiently prepared for.

this book is probably the best tenner I've spent in a year!

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative with a touch of wry humour!, 14 Jun 2004
Most of "Successful Interviews" is filled with advice on how to answer a diverse range of questions that range from "All of us have personality defects. What is yours?" and "What involvement have you had in writing business strategy?" to "How do you respond to authority?" Interestingly, Yeung advises that none of these questions has an ideal answer and that we the readers need to think of answers that are pertinent to us as individuals. But he does provide guidance on how to frame answers that avoid lying but do present us in a good light.

The book also contains advice on how to handle assessment centres. Also, Yeung recommends that we follow interviews up with a thank you letter to interviewers, which is something I have just started to do--I'll keep you posted as to whether it gets me a job or not!

I'd read one of Rob Yeung's other books "Coaching People" (2nd edition, How To Books - which focuses on questions to ask to build rapport and establish a safe learning environment to help develop people to achieve better performance from them). "Successful Interviews" is written in a very similar style - with short paragraphs and lots of subheadings that break up the text and make it very easily digestible.

:o)

5.0 out of 5 stars This book really made a difference!, 10 Oct 2004
By A Customer
I needed help. Despite being a succesful manager I hadn't attended an interview or even heard of an assesment centre before. This book really works because it prepares your mind for those situations. It dosen't give you the answers, it helps you to find them. I must have read it cover to cover three times. I had always avoided interviews, because I didn't think I was very good at them. Now I know I was just badly prepared. After I read this book I got offer after offer (no kidding, honest) and then finally I got the job I wanted at the salary I wanted. That has to be the best advert for buying this book!
