Product Description

Australian Outlook

An indispensible guide for anyone wishing to work in Austrlia.

Product Description

With ever-increasing competition for entry into Australia and its employment market, it is useful for migrant job-hunters to arm themselves with as much practical and relevant information as possible. This handbook aims to provide a step-by-step guide to all aspects of finding both permanent and casual employment in Australia. This revised edition explains the economic climate, where to look for work, what pay and conditions to expect and provides key information about tax, contracts, your rights at work and the Australian philosophy of employment. The book includes details about the tax system being implemented in July 2000 plus updates on pensions, Newstart allowances and economic conditions, as well as useful web site addresses to enable online job searching outside Australia.

4.0 out of 5 stars Basic but comprehensive, 20 Feb 2003

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, I wanted to understand the tax implications and visa types but couln't find any straight information on the internet.

I was pleasently suprised it contains all that and more.

I was much amused by the comments on Australian culture in the workplace the concept or sickies, dobers and mates.

The book is well researched, as to how accurate, I will have to tell you after I have worked out there!

3.0 out of 5 stars informative but dated, 30 Jul 2005
By Sue Godsall (birmingham, uk) - See all my reviews
there is alot of informative information in this book from healthcare to workplace issues, tax implications to useful addresses. I found it perfect for starting to get my head around all the differences to what I am use to in the UK BUT IT'S OUT OF DATE on alot of things. The book has been revised and updated on some things. However, they have not put any notes on other sections to say if it is still the same today, e.g. is it still the same as what was quoted in 2000 on the tax law???

Overall it is a good starting book to get a feel for what you need current information on before you travel.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much irrelevant waffle, 4 Nov 2007
I bought this book hoping that it would give me a good insight into the ins and outs of job hunting and working in Australia. I found that there where a number of whole chapters that were irrelevant to my profession or not worth reading. Also the tax forms shown in the book are from 1999!
So many questions unanswered. For example for each profession listed it states where to study it...Why would you want to know this when you are Looking for a Job as the book it titled?? Regarding salary it does specify whether its per week or per month so it doesn't mean anything! It lists several recruitment agencies, most of which are too general for my area. I have found more useful info on google than in this book.
