5.0 out of 5 stars Essential guide for any writer, 5 Oct 2003
The 5th edition of this book covers every aspect of writing from getting started to submitting to newspapers, magazines and competitions; from short stories to novels, from poetry and non-fiction to radio, screen and stage. The author includes every kind of market from the Small Press to the Internet. Nothing is omitted. Such a comprehensive guide is essential for any writer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but a little biased, 16 Oct 2007

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
I agree that this book covers many useful aspects of getting published. As an author about to release his first book I have found a lot of useful information within the pages of this tome.

However the author's barely concealed dislike of self-publishing is something to be wary of. I know a few people who have self-published either directly or via so called "vanity" press companies and I've heard nothing but good things from them. True, they're not making loads of money but this is one of the well established facts of self-publishing versus traditional publishing. It is hardly something that is kept a secret.

If you are producing a book in a niche area (perhaps about your town) which will have a limited readership, self-publishing remains the only viable option. Therefore the reader of this book should not be scared off by the author's opinions on the subject.
