Product Description

Product Description

This volume completes the "Aircraft of the Aces" trilogy on the elite pilots that flew the Spitfire in World War II. The Spitfire Mk V was the workhorse of the wartime marks, being flown in combat across the globe. It was the first of its type to be built in sufficient numbers to allow it to serve in the Far East, Australia, North Africa and Russia. A robust machine, it was often outclassed by the Luftwaffe's Fw 190. Nevertheless, pilots of the calibre of Malan, Tuck, Johnson, Beurling, Caldwell and Duke all enjoyed success with the Mk V and are described in the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another worthwhile Osprey title, 27 July 2009
Once again this is another useful addition from Osprey to the libraries of those readers with an interest in the most famous of WWII fighters. The book follows the standard "Aircraft of the Aces" format covering the service history of the marque with a particular emphasis on those aces who used the Spitfire Mk V as their mount. Full of good period photos and the invaluable colour profiles this is a valued addition to the collections of WWII aviation enthusiasts and modellers.

2.0 out of 5 stars Jeffrey Quill Spitfire test pilot, 10 April 2009
By S. M. T. Peters (London UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It's a great shame that the author when referring to the Spitfire test pilot Jeffrey Quill manages to misspell his name as 'Geoffrey' - insufficiently rigorous for a reference book, in my opinion, and an error I hope might be corrected in a future edition.
