4.0 out of 5 stars Practical , Clear and Concise compact value for money, 23 Dec 1999
This review is from: Outboard Engines: Troubleshooting, Maintenance and Repair (Hardcover)
Though heavily orientated to the American user this book is a tour de force in common sense. It deals primarily with the component parts, moves on to servicing then most usefully deals with realistic 'troubleshooting' with excellent yet simple diagnostic testing. The approach is designed to allow the amateur to ascertain the fault then judge whether or not it's within his/her capabilities. Cuts out an awful lot of "Manufacturer manual repitition" or waffle. This book I'd say though expensive and small is well worth it and I'd recomend it to anyone who needs to keep an outboard running and performing well.Top marks Ed!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginner/intermediate mechanics & outboard owners, 18 Jun 2010
Firstly, this is not a replacement for an owners manual, so if you have a specific job to do on a specific outboard, this book might disappoint. However, if you are an owner of an outboard and you wish to better understand how it works, how all it's subsystems work and how to look after it then this is an excellent resource.

Even if, like me, you aren't comfortable with major mechanical works there's a lot to be said for trying the basic acts of troubleshooting on an engine before taking it to a dealer. If you can drop off your outboard and reel off a list of troubleshooting steps that you've been through it will save them time and they'll probably be less likely to rip you off!

3.0 out of 5 stars Contact your dealer?, 2 Jun 2009

(REAL NAME)
I bought this book hoping for some help with my non-functioning tilt switch and sender unit. There is a chapter which includes references to the item, but then suggests you contact your dealer. I found the solution on the US Honda Outboard Forum. It's a useful little book, but it lacks some vital, basic information.
