1.0 out of 5 stars dire, glad I didn't spend my own money on it, 2 May 2009
Someone at work abandoned a copy of this in the kitchen so, with Draper being in the news, I picked it up out of interest. I read the first 50 pages or so on a train the following day and I was amazed at just how bad it was. I'd kind of assumed that Draper had some talent, albeit the kind of talent I really don't approve of, but how wrong I was. A pointless book that simply rehashes advice from other, much better, works by people with some real understanding of human nature. I can't think that this would have been published if the author hadn't been (in)famous for other reasons.

1.0 out of 5 stars why was my first review deleted?, 13 April 2009
My first review has been removed. I presume Derek Draper has complained about negative comments and Amazon have foolishly caved in to him.

Let me repeat it briefly, therefore: I have read several books designed to assist those with mental health problems, particularly depression, and the majority of these offer informed insights and useful advice. This book is not one of them being rather glib, shallow, and vacuous.

The expression "snake oil salesman" comes to mind.

Now go on Derek, start complaining again and see if you can get this one removed. You and your pals really don't like free speech do you?

1.0 out of 5 stars The Hannibal Lecter vegetarian cookbook, 16 April 2009
This book contains sections entitled "Telling the truth", "Acting your age", and "Being your own worst enemy". Really, it does. Check the "Look inside" feature.

It absolutely beggars belief that someone with Dolly Draper's issues and track record could presume to offer other people advice on such matters. There's a huge great beam in his own eye he needs to attend to before attending to the mote in other people's.

It's also unclear what his formal qualifications to offer advice in this area are. His claimed MA "in Berkeley" has been challenged by blogger Paul Staines. Staines has alleged - and Dolly has not disproved - that Draper was actually expelled from the college from which he claims an MA in psychotherapy, and that he did not graduate.

On that basis, Draper would appear to be no more qualified than anyone else to write a book like this. On the basis of his actual behaviour as a blogger and political activist, he's positively disqualified.

I have often pondered the nature of the problem to which Derek Draper is the answer. After reading his book, I'm still stumped.
