Product Description

Product Description

Contrary to popular belief, the Japanese Army widely employed tanks within the Pacific theater of war. This title details their key role in the conquests of Singapore and Malaya, as well as their later use in Burma, Saipan, and the Philippines, including in the amphibious assault of Corregidor. The tanks were developed against the odds, with the tank program often being neglected to pursue the popular warship development. Their use in the most difficult of terrain is a testament to their ingenuity. Steven J Zaloga's book offers a rare insight into a largely overlooked subject and is rich with photographs and artwork, providing a wonderful resource for the construction and design of these fascinating tanks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good introduction to Japanese tanks, 10 Nov 2009
By Juha Vuorela (Finland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book covers the technical development and operational use of Japanese tanks not only during the World War 2, but also in the 1930s. Osprey's 48-page "New Wanguard" books are sometimes not-that-good, but I think Mr Zaloga has succeeded pretty well with this one.

The first chapter dealing with the pre-World War 2 tank types and their operational use is excellent. The second chapter covering the World War 2 types and their deployment is not as good. The chapter is just too full of different kind of tank types listed one after another. I think it would have been better to focus on just the most common tank types and omit some rare prototypes. The last chapter covers the Japanese tank combat in the 1941-45's war. The covering is of course very brief, but I think it is still quite extensive and informative.

The book includes also tables showing tank production statistics which is a splendid thing. In addition to the appropriate content, the value of this book is the rare topic which has unfortunately rather small coverage in English-written literature. There are plenty of books about Japanese tanks, but most of them are in Japanese.

Photos of the book are good and surely carefully selected, although many of them depict destroyed/captured tanks. The colour illustrations made by Mr Bryan are nice-looking and informative. The included short summary of Japanese tank camouflage/markings is also very useful for scale modellers and war gamers.

Highly recommended as a brief, but very good introduction to Japanese tanks and their operations during the 1930s and 1940s.
