Product Description

Product Description

This is the story of "Superprix", Birmingham's very own road race - the subject of much controversy amongst residents of the city, politicians' and race fans alike.

About the Author

Sam Collins grew up in South London within sight of the Crystal Palace Race Circuit and at the age of 16, he found himself on work experience at Williams F1. Sam has been heavily involved in the sport ever since, having studied automotive and motorsport engineering he then went on a mission to write a clear and easy-to-use guide to getting started in motorsport (How to Get Started in Motorsport - Veloce). Since then, Sam has written for Motorsport News, Autosport, and Model Collector. He has also written three other Veloce bestsellers: Autodrome - The lost race circuits of Europe, Unraced ... and a homage to where it all began for him in Motor Racing at Crystal Palace - London's own circuit. Currently, Sam is working as Deputy Editor of the world's leading journal of motorsport technology Racecar Engineering, a position that gives him unique access to the inner workings of international motorsport, and is also a regular on entry lists as he competes in sprints, hillclimbs, races, rallies and trials. He lives in St Ippolyts near Hitchin, in Hertforshire. David Page first began following motorsport when he got sucked into 'Mansellmania' in 1992, when Nigel Mansell dominated Formula One. In 2001 he attended the University of Wolverhampton to study a Photography degree. During this time he became more interested in the history of motorsport. David was intrigued by the famous road circuits where many racing drivers were brave enough to race wheel-to-wheel - circuits such as the old Nurburgring Nordschleife, or Spa-Francochamps. But his most compelling interest wasn't to be realised until he learnt about a little-known British street motor sport event called the Birmingham Superprix.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book, well worth reading, 23 Mar 2010

This review is from: Superprix: The Story of Birmingham's Motor Race (Those Were the Days Series) (Paperback)
I saw this book advertised in Autosport magazine. As a Brummie motorsport fan, with fond memories of the Birmingham Superprix, this book was a 'must read'.

The book is a great effort which is well worth reading if you are interested in, or have memories of the Superpirx.

My only critisism is that it whilst it focuses on the main F3000 events there is not enough mention of the fantastic support races such as the BTCC races featuring the RS500's or the Metro 6R4 challenge races.

The Superprix was a unique event which has been captured well within this book. The event ran for 5 years, and it is a great shame that it came to an end. It reminds me of just how much better motor sport events were in this era - there was overtaking in F1, the RAC rally lasted for 5 days and travelled the UK, the BTCC featured RS500's; happy days........

I would recomend this book, and Amazon offer it at the cheapest price.

This review is from: Superprix: The Story of Birmingham's Motor Race (Those Were the Days Series) (Paperback)
A superb book for any motorsport enthusiast, detailing the trials and tribulations of setting up a street car race. This is also a wonderful nostalgic year-by-year look at Birmingham's F3000 championship race from 1986 to 1990.
A fascinating look at one of the UK's most exciting races.
