Product Description

Product Description

Herschel McKee's remarkable life story reads like that of a comic-book hero. A daredevil, a leader of men and, above all, a survivor, McKee fought in both World Wars, suffering numerous skirmishes with death. His colourful life included spells as a Foreign Legion soldier, fighter-pilot ace with the elite Lafayette Flying Corps, prisoner-of-war escapee, racing driver, WWII bomber-wing commander and test pilot. His amazing resilience led to him being nicknamed 'The Man Who Would Not Die' while he was still alive. Written in a lively, engaging style, here is the true story of an extraordinary man.

This review is from: The Man Who Would Not Die: The Remarkable Story of 'Lucky' Herschel McKee Barnstormer, war hero, test pilot, motor racer, scoundrel: The Remarkable Life of Herschel McKee (Hardcover)
This book proves that you dont have to be world famous to lead an unbelievable life. He was everything the preview states, a war hero (twice), a scoundrel, motor racer, etc. Fascinating.

An interesting book and a true story. Once you start reading its hard to put it down.Although the story about the flying antics in The Great War are a bit dubious. Great photos to.

5.0 out of 5 stars What is the meaning of fear?, 21 Mar 2009

This review is from: The Man Who Would Not Die: The Remarkable Story of 'Lucky' Herschel McKee Barnstormer, war hero, test pilot, motor racer, scoundrel: The Remarkable Life of Herschel McKee (Hardcover)
I accept the comments made by the previous reviewer- one suspects that not all of the book is purely factual! Nevertheless, I found it an excellent read- the author's wife is McKee's grandaughter. A keen motorcyclist, he was a forerunner of Evel Knievel. He meets many fascinating characters from the board track era. This was one of the most dangerous and fastest forms of motor racing that there has ever been. Drivers, and to a lesser extent, their mechanics, had a similar status in their day of movie stars and certainly earned it!! Anybody interested in this form of racing could do no better than read Gary Doyle's life of the great Jimmy Murphy entitled "King of the Boards". McKee never made it as a driver- his real talent lay in flying. There is a veritable catalogue of escape from disaster on two and four wheels as well as in the air!!- this book is aptly named. He was, of course, a fascinating individual, albeit not the sort of person you would wish to introduce your daughter to, but she would probably be keen to go out with him. Bigamy was perhaps the only thing that produced anything in him close to fear, and it would only appear to be his war record that prevented any prosecution. Nevertheless, even when the women found out, they seemed able to forgive him almost anything. I don't think many could get away with that!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Only the good die young!
Herschel Mckee is not a likeable man but I suppose he is a product of his time. Obsessed by racing and speed, he risks his life and gets away with it in an amazing way. Read more
