4.0 out of 5 stars Hope Deferred, 15 Jan 2009

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: 16 Air Assault Brigade: Britain's Rapid Reaction Force: The History of Britain's Airborne Rapid Reaction Force (Hardcover)
This is the chequered career of 16 Air Assault Brigade intended to be the British Army's first airmobile formation and the home of its Apache helicopters. As such the book includes a good slice of reportage on the various campaigns (Sierra Leone, Bosnia, Macedonia, Iraq and Afghanistan) mixed with the reality of campaigning abroad and of obtaining funding in a western democracy. Plans are put together to fund up a project, inevitably the funding runs out, and plans are then altered. One is left wondering who to blame (as if blaming did any good) when a little thought might indicate the plans were never going to get funded, and a little care might prevent us signing up yet more British units for overseas service. Left trapped in the middle are the men with (in some cases) inadequate kit. A good calm account by Tim Ripley.
