Product Description

From the Back Cover

We have a morbid fascination of murder by poison. The crime is
usually premeditated, often with detailed planning needed to administer the
poison without suspicion, either to the victim or to the subsequent
investigators. Death may take weeks or months as the poison slowly takes
hold. In past times the penalty of death was almost always invoked for such
heartless crimes.

Norfolk Poisoners is aimed at readers who enjoy local history and stories
of true crimes. This is one of the few books which deals specifically with
the murders around Norwich and Norfolk. The book covers 15 or so actual
crimes from the heyday of poisoning - the 19th century - introducing us to
the murderers, their victims and the investigations, based on contemporary
reports, trial records and gallows broadsheets.

The author: Pamela is a freelance historian and journalist who grew up in
Norfolk and, following a degree in English, has lived in Norwich for over
20 years. She has written several books on the history of Norwich and
Norfolk, and also writes romantic fiction as Kate Hardy; she was
shortlisted for the Romantic Novelists' Association Romance prize in 2006.
She lives with her husband, two children, a Springer spaniel, and too many
books to count!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating social, medical and legal history, 27 Nov 2007
By Ruby Millar (North West England) - See all my reviews
As someone who collected poison bottles as a child, I've always had an interest in this topic and I wish Pam Brooks's book had been available back then! 'Ghastly True Tales of the Norfolk Poisoners' completely lives up to its enticing title by providing an intricately researched history of 16 poisoning cases and placing them in the social context of the day. Ms. Brooks skillfully combines original legal documentation and contemporary witness statements with fascinatingly detailed medical and scientific evidence to throw fresh insight not only onto the crimes themselves, but onto the lives of ordinary rural communities in the nineteenth century. What's more she does this in an engaging and accessible way.

Unfortunately I had to wait to finish reading it as my daughter (aged 12) picked it up and became completely engrossed!
