5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, 24 Jul 2008
A lovely book - relaxing to read, but also holds you throughout. The author is very honest and I really related to the stuff about reloacting abroad to live with a new partner.

Meeting mr Kim really makes Seoul sound like one of the most vibrant places on earth, while the rest of Korea seems beautiful and also full of fascinating history, which is still being played out now before our very eyes. Reading this book, if you've got any interest in the far east, would be second only to watching 'Good Vibrations' play live or hanging out in one of the restaurants or Budhhist retreats!

I want to go and make some Kimchi now - and guess what - the book even has a recipe at the end! Great stuff!

1.0 out of 5 stars offensive to Korean people!, 7 Nov 2009
It's interesting that there are no reviews about this book by a person who is actually KOREAN. Well, amazon.co.uk, today is your lucky day because here is one to get you started.

As a person of Korean descent, I could not help but be totally offended by this book. If you're wondering, this is essentially the story of a cougar who follows a boy not even old enough to be out of university over to Seoul because she's sick of getting a cushy salary and living in a luxury apartment in Canada (I mean, who can blame her?!)

Ms. Barclay proceeds to lace her book with offensive, deragatory passages about the Korean people and culture including describing Korean women as "delicate ladies in silk" (you'd think she was talking about concubines with phrasing like that), distresses over the fact that she might accidentally order dog in a restaurant (again straight up offensive, and if you can't understand why, you need to go back to school), and makes fun of the Korean accent with phrases such as "Otis Reeding" "law fish" and "ferry ferry hhat!"

Perhaps the most ridiculous part of the book is at the very end in her index of "Further Information About South Korea", when she recommends mul naengmyun (icy broth with noodles) as a recommended food "only for the adventurous." If you know about Korean food at all, you know that this is an absolute joke because mul naengmyun is about as basic as it gets. This also shows that Ms. Barclay's palate is just as bland as her writing style.

It is also incredible that after spending so much time in Korea, she uses horrendeous Korean romanization, such as "fweh" for what is actually "hweh" being one prime example. She also says that "annyong haseyo" means to "go in peace." This is straight up wrong because it actually means "hello." (If you're saying hello to a person, why would you simultaneously tell them to go?!). Furthermore, I think it takes an awful lot of audacity to paint yourself as an expert on Korea when you only spend three months there.

It is no surprise that this book is not readily available on American Amazon, because if it were, Ms. Barclay would surely be eaten alive by the Korean-American community.

5.0 out of 5 stars Escape to Korea, 15 Sep 2009
A great read, this book took me far away from the stuffy tube I was reading it on.
The authour really paints a vivid picture of a country and a culture I knew little about, through the places, people and the food that she experiences.
Funny and interesting, I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes travelling or is interested in other cultures.
