1.0 out of 5 stars Don't judge this book by its cover, 24 Nov 2008
By Dr. L. MCCAFFREY (Barnsley, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've been looking for a good book on evolution for my children, and there seems to be a dearth of them. The colours and the concept on the cover of this book attracted me to 'The Tree of Life'. But if you expect the interior to reflect the admittedly glorious cover, then be prepared: the illustrations are monochrome, in a kind of purple-grey. What a disappointment. But that is just the start:

The text is repetitive, obscure and ill suited to the age group (4years and up)
The illustrations are tedious, and at one point introduce highly evolved mammals (e.g. wolves and man) before going back to the age of the Dinosaurs on the following pages.
(And alright, this might be a niggle), the first image of Earth after its formation has the continents recognisably in their current configuration. Okay, I admit it, I'm a geologist. But these things are important!

In the absence of much else, you could do better than buy this book to use as a colouring-in exercise, but beyond that my (usually attentive) four year old lost interest in minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book on evolution for young children!, 21 July 1999
By A Customer
"Tree of Life" is a educational storybook, which tells the story of biological evolution from before the first form of life appeared, to the appearance of the first humans, and all in words even a preschooler can understand. My three year old only had a few questions the first time I read it, and it is now one of his favorites. The large, beautiful purple and white illustrations also make it as enjoyable to look at as it is to read.

1.0 out of 5 stars very disappointing, 5 Feb 2009
By mavroesque (germany) - See all my reviews
This book is not "lavishly illustrated" at all, only the front cover is in colour, the rest in black and white and is presented and written in a style of evangelical pamphlets, weird considering it is about evolution. It is as if it is trying to convince theists that evolution is not so bad after all. Does not at all seem appropriate for children of any age, not clearly explained for young children, and too simple and weird for older kids! There must be better books out there than this! Poor!
