About the Author

Marshall McLuhan was a Canadian educator, philosopher and scholar - a professor of English Literature, a literary critic and a communications theorist. McLuhan's work is viewed as one of the cornerstones of the study of media theory. McLuhan is known for coining the expressions 'the medium is the message' and the 'global village'. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

This book is an interesting collaboration of philosophical ideas and graphic design.
It offers a condensed retelling of McLuhan's basic theories. I would recommend this book as it is easily accessable and readable as much for the use of imagery as for the use of words. If you want a series and indepth look at McLuhans work then 'the mechanical bride' or 'understanding media' would be far more suitable as they contain far more information. But i still highly regard this book as almost a conceptual piece.
A classic and highly memorable work as well as a fun and insightful read, highly recommended.

Often cited but rarely understood, I don't know of anyone who better explains the media landscape than Marshall McLuhan. The Medium is the Massage stretches the limts of the book as a format whilst offering deep insight into the functioning of the information world. Combining a clever mix of visual tricks with a distilled version of McLuhan's philosophy of communication, the book often surprises with its energy, movement and true originality meaning it remains as fresh today as when it was first published.

Some of the ideas presented in the book may be obscure to those who don't know the author's work. For those who really want to get involved with McLuhan's ideas I would recommend reading Understand Media, probably more than once.

Buy this book - you won't regret it.

This is an entertaining and quirky way into some of Marshall McLuhan's key concepts such as the "the global village" or "the medium is the message". Though I would of course recommend also reading McLuhan's "Understanding Media (Routledge Classics)" if you haven't already done so before coming to this book.

So why am I giving it such a low score? Well that is entirely down to the printing of this particular edition of the book. It utterly ruins Quentin Fiore's inventive illustrations of McLuhan's ideas by significantly miss-aligning a great many of the two page graphic spreads - particularly at the start of the book. I can see at least one other review of this edition that makes a similar observation so it's unlikely that I have an one off dud copy. If you really want to enjoy this book as it was meant to be then look for a different edition to this one.

In case you want to understand our world and discover how stuck in time we are, this book is a must in any library.

Penguin classics has printed a cheap and poor edition in this case. Pages do not fit properly and trim is not good enough

Marshall McLuhan and Quentin Fiore's though-provoking analysis of "media". From how it can influence your opinions to how you interpret a corporate logo. An essential read that makes you sit up and think, and is still very relevant today, considering that it was first published in 1967.

We all know the phenomenon of mobile phones changing human behaviour. Well Marshall McLuhan predicted this! This book is an excellent companion to Understanding Media. To wet your intellectual pallet, there is an excellent audio lecture by Terence McKenna about all things McLuhan. If you Google McKenna's name along side McLuhan's it's easily found.

Along with Ayn Rand, Marshall McLuhan is the philosopher of Silicon Valley. This is how serious the mans ideas are. All the top Silicon Valley people know McLuhan.

I wish I had read this in 1970s (when it was on my reading lists) and I wish every politician, social-worker and technologist would read it now. The paradigm shift for society was predicted (already happening!) and 'We' have tried to ignore the social aspects of it ever since!
