5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly entertaining read, 15 May 2001
Until I read this history I had no idea of the complexity of North Africa's history nor of how close Europe came to being a Muslim region through the Arab conquest of much of Spain. It is a highly entertaining read, and highly educational at the same time. I would recommend this to anyone going to Tunisia, Libya, Algeria or Morocco as understanding of the region's history will make your sightseeing far more enjoyable. The book covers the archaic period of Phoenician civilisation via the glory days of Carthage through the Arab invasion to the modern period. Excellent.
