5.0 out of 5 stars Part four in a brilliant series on aviation's first century, 1 April 2007
By Bor (Amsterdam) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wings of Change (Aviation Century) (Hardcover)
I have to begin this review with telling you that I really like this five part series on the history of aviation. I've reviewed all five titles to give an idea of what you can expect in each of these books. Together they give a very good impression of the achievements of aviation in it's first century. What makes this series special to me is its format of illustrating the aircraft mentioned in the text with photographs of the real thing where possible, or replica's if no originals are left. This format is used throughout the series, which means that all five books have a similar feel to them.

Wings of Change is about civil aviation after World War 2. It has five chapters. The first is about airliners and their development. It begins with piston engined liners like the DC-3, DC-6, Constellation and Il-14. These are superceeded by turboprops like the An-24, Il-18, Fokker 27 and Dash 8, and also by jet-powered liners. The Comet,DC-8 and B-707 get mentioned here, as do the Tu-154 and Concorde and all well-known Boeings. But I've also found the An-225. My only criticism about this chapter is that it doesn't follow the series format, and lacks pictures taken in the museum look.

Chapter 2 deals with private aircraft. This includes privately owned historic aircraft, but also custom built aircraft. The original format is restored here, and for instance the Waco ATO Taperwing gets the "museum treatment", as it is photographed from all angles, including a cockpit shot.

Chapter 3 deals with ballooning. It begins with describing the achievements of early balloon flights and continues with the airships from the 1920's and 30's, like the Zeppelins. The Blimp revival is covered, as is hot-air ballooning. To round this chapter off, special attention is paid to the round the world trip by Piccard and Jones in 1999.

Chapter 4 deals with rotorblades, The first pages of the chapter show early helicopters (like the Fa.61 from 1936 and the R-4 from 1942). It follows through with all the well-known types like the Huey, Chinook and Sea King, and military helicopters like the Apache. Also included is the OV-22.

Chapter 5 is called At the Frontier. It shows a number of radical designs, meant to push the boundaries of aviation even further. Included in the chapter are the Bell X-1, the X-15 and the Valkyrie. Tha latter part of this chapter gives short biographies of test pilots from this period.

This book gives a good allround impression of civil aviation after WW2. Though it doesn't stick to the series format as much as the other titles do, it still does sufficiently to make it special. Recommended.
