Review

Wonderful. I couldn't put it down (Noam Chomsky)

Chasing the Scream is a remarkable book. It is moving and articulate and impossible to put down. Read it and demand our politicians take note (Evening Standard)

Excellent . Hari affirms the role he has already established for himself: a crucial voice in, as well as commentator on, the urgent cause of not merely "reforming" the way society deals with the drugs crisis but tearing it up completely (Observer)

Intoxicatingly thrilling ... It will change the drug debate forever (Russell Brand)

Superb journalism and thrilling story-telling (Naomi Klein)

An absolutely stunning book. It will blow your mind, and blow you away (Elton John)

This book is, forgive the obvious phrase, screamingly addictive. The story it tells, jaw-droppingly horrific, hilarious and incredible, is one everyone should know: that is all true boggles the mind fascinated and infuriates by equal measure. Johann Hari, in brilliant prose, exposes one of the greatest and most harmful scandals of the past hundred years (Stephen Fry)

Johann Hari's book is the perfect antidote to the war on drugs, one of the most under-discussed moral injustices of our time. It combines rigorous research and deeply human story-telling. It will prompt an urgently-needed debate (Glenn Greenwald)

Hari has conducted a mass of diligently pursued research for this book, talking to seemingly everybody from poor Mexicans who have lost loved ones amid the psychotic violence of gang warfare to the recently retired president of Uruguay, José Mujica . When the arguments are put, they are powerful and meticulously considered (Stuart Walton Review)

Important and thought provoking (Sunday Herald, Book of the Year 2015)

As a physician of some 45 years standing the beneficial aspects of cannabis are well known to me; as are the non addictive effects of post operative narcotics. What I was not aware of was the politics and hypocrisy surrounding the banning of these drugs in the first place (cf Randolph Hearst, Harry Anslinger, Lamont Dupont et al) and the idiotic policy of continuing its proscription in the light of nearly a hundred years of failure. "The USA spends about 45 billion dollars a year preventing, prosecuting and imprisoning people caught in possession of drugs.... legalising and taxing the drugs would bring a similar 45 billion dollars into the treasury every year.... in other words a saving of 90 billion dollars to the USA taxpayer."
The propaganda against cannabis in the 1930s by Anslinger would have made Goebbels proud. The drug/racial smears first against blacks, then mexicans, the chinese workers and in the 1950s communists were as ingenious as they were evil; as was Nixon's ban on cannabis in the early 1970s to ensure his problem with the Vietnam protesters was minimised.
In a society that smokes tobacco and drinks alcohol there is absolutely no sense in banning drugs for medical reasons. But for political and commercial self interests... well then there's every reason.
Common sense versus money and political power is a no brainer.

This book is essential reading for anyone with an open mind and a fundamental grasp of economics.

The most compelling argument I've ever read for the end to the war on drugs. Impartial and balanced, it looks at the pros and cons. If only everyone would read this book, we may see a change - I hope it's in my lifetime.

I'm about three quarters of the way through it so far. An amazing book with so many people's stories - it's teaching me a lot more about why our punitive drug policies need to change.

Very well written and researched but a little wolly and lovely on the legalise drugs debate. He certainly has many, many serious and thought provoking conclusions and admits his path may be dangerous. However he is courageous enough to go up against the drug lords and the violence/corruption they fund with drugs cash. If drugs were legal - like booze/fags they would kill of the illegal trade but what problems would this cause?

A balanced and informed book about the futility of the war on drugs.
As someone in the health profession I have often treated many addicts and I sometimes lacked the compassion and empathy to treat them as a person and not just an addiction. This book will make me pause before I do that again.

No book has influence me as much as this did and I think it will be a big factor in ending the war on drugs.... And the war on those suffering!

Excellent book - the writing was great for a factual book, a bit like reading a good story that you cannot put down. Well researched and really should give those in power a reason for changing the whole approach to drugs. So many good examples of positive things that are happening around the world - why not in the rest? Should be compulsory reading for all government ministers!

Easy to read, contains loads of information made accessible because if the proximate sources. Enjoyed it from beginning to end. Hope is is 100% reliable and not a #WarOnDrugs counter narrative. I give the author the benefit of doubt, despite some past gaffes.
