Product Description

Product Description

This title is presented with an introduction by Darwin's great-great-granddaughter, Ruth Padel. When the eminent naturalist Charles Darwin returned from South America on board the H.M.S Beagle in 1836, he brought with him the notes and evidence which would form the basis of his landmark theory of evolution of species by a process of natural selection. This theory, published as "The Origin of Species" in 1859, is the basis of modern biology and the concept of biodiversity. It also sparked a fierce scientific, religious and philosophical debate which still continues today. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

About the Author

Charles Darwin was born on February 12, 1809 in Shropshire, England. He was educated at Edinburgh University and Christ's College, Cambridge. Between 1831 and 1836 he travelled in South America aboard the H.M.S Beagle to explore the geology and natural history of the area, and published his journal of findings in 1839. His most famous book On the Origin of the Species by Means of Natural Selection, appeared in 1859 and is arguably one of the most important scientific works ever published. The theories of evolution and natural selection proposed in this book and The Descent of Man (1871) are still the subject of intense debate and scrutiny today. Charles Darwin died on 19 April, 1882 and was buried in Westminster Abbey. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two Darwins for the price of one., 15 Aug 2008
By G. Heron (Falkirk, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
By combining the two books into one volume the publisher gives the reader the chance to see Darwin in two different stages of his life.
The Voyage of the Beagle shows us the young Darwin, energetic and enthusiastic with a brilliant mind and a keen observer of everything he sees.
This is a wonderful book and Darwin gives a facinating look at South America and Australia as it was 200 years ago. If you have ever been bored by some friend showing you his holiday snaps as he drones on about every detail of his holiday you might be put off buying a book describing a five year sea voyage but don't be fooled, this is Indiana Jones meets the theory of evolution.
In the Origin of Species we have a much older but just as brilliant Darwin describing his theory of evolution by natural selection. He takes us through the basic idea and then uses it to explain why the natural world is the way we see it. The fundamental idea is brilliant in its simplicity and in its power to explain. What is all the more amazing is at the time Darwin was writing there was no concept of genetics and the discovery of DNA was 100 years away. Inevitably this book may appear a bit dry compared to the high adventure of The Voyage of the Beagle but the reader is more than compensated by the knowledge that they are reading one of the most important books every written in the history of mankind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Origin Of Species/ Voyage Of The Beagle, 8 Jan 2010
By Nick (England) - See all my reviews
There is little need to review these two books because they are so well read and revered in scientific and historical communitys but this collection was a great find.
Both books are compiled together in chronological order with a wonderful new little prologue.
The front cover artwork is probably the most beautiful and up to date I've seen of any Darwin reprints.
The 'voyage of the beagles'was Darwins first book and within it is the first few threads of Darwins thinking on evoloution.
Its easy to read but never too simple to enjoy, basically its a diary of Darwins exploits and travels. Its wonderful to get into the mindset of a scientist who was destined for greater things. The descriptions of the landscapes and animals are beautifully portrayed and let you have a real feel for the culture and bizare discoverys, the crew of the beagle had made.
There is little to say about the origin of species that you won't have heard, infact I doubt you need to read a review of this book to appreciate how good it is.
Our entire modern biological understanding has only grown since this book, although not a complete theory at the time, its hard not to be compelled by the writtings even now.
I loved the double edition of these books and it was also very cheap to buy.
I urge you to read these books and understand just how influential they have been to society in general.
