Review

'What animate the book... are Lola's feisty voice and her authentic evocation of her surroundings... The idiosyncratic phrasing contributes to the appeal of Adeniran's memorable heroine.' --The Guardian

Product Description

A compelling story about the human spirit and resilience against the odds. Imagine This is the journal of Lola Ogunwole which she starts at the age of nine; it charts her survival from childhood to adulthood. Born in London to Nigerian parents, Lola and her brother Adebola grow up in a temporary foster home after their mother abandons them. They are briefly reunited with their father when, in danger of losing them for good, he packs up and moves them back to Nigeria to live. For Lola, the trauma of leaving London and settling in Lagos is soon overshadowed by separation from her father and the only constant in her life, her brother Adebola. They are both sent to live with different relatives and Lola ends up with her aunt, in a small village called Idogun where her struggle for survival begins.

5.0 out of 5 stars I didn't expect to like it , 7 Nov 2007
To be honest a book written in diary form about the life and times of a young African girl did not instantly appeal to me in any way shape or form. However, immensely positive reviews from friends who had read the book left me wanting to know what all the fuss was about. When I started reading it, I realised that this was not a book about the life of a young African girl, it was a book about life and the experiences it throws at you at times in an uncompromising manner. I was shocked at how much I enjoyed it. I was addicted from the moment I picked it up and was left wanting when I finished reading it and had to put it down. Give it a go, you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous , 7 Nov 2007
A truly fabulous read that takes you on an emotional rollercoaster as you share the highs and unfortunately very frequent lows of the wonderful Lola. I enjoyed it so much I didn't want to finish reading it, but the addictive nature of the writing meant that to my personal disappointment I finished reading it in just 3 days. Once I picked it up, I simply could not put it down. A wonderful and thoroughly enjoyable piece of literature written in a way that appeals to all regardless of age or gender.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an Unexpected Delight, 9 Oct 2007

I was hooked from the moment I started reading it. I shared the highs and lows of Lola's life like it were my own. The book triumphs in captivating your imagination as you travel with Lola along her journey of self discovery and awareness. A must read. For those who hate books written in journal form, I challenge you to read this book and maintain that dislike.
