5.0 out of 5 stars DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT..., 24 May 2003
By Lawyeraau (Balmoral Castle) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)
This is a wonderful, well written and well organized little book, sized to travel with its owner. It fits easily into one's pocket for easy access. It provides valuable information at one's fingertips. One should read this book before climbing or trekking above 7,000 feet (2,000 meters). It could save one's life.

The book is chock full of valuable information, and everything is explained in laymen's language. It explains what altitude sickness is, so that one may recognize its presence, and advises the reader on how to prevent it. It also provides treatment information for the various types of altitude illnesses to which one may fall prey.

This is a must have book for anyone who wants to stay healthy while scaling new heights. If one should think that this book is unnecessary, one need only pause to reflect upon the dedication found on the flyleaf of the book, "To those who died of altitude sickness". Enough said!

4.0 out of 5 stars In Depth and Accessable , 9 Jan 2009
By M. G. Chisholm "chiefengineer3" (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
If like me you are looking for information that may help you at altitude when climbing then this little book may just be for you. It's dry, and there's no getting away from that, however it has a good and apparently unbiased approach to dealing with altitude sickness. It covers all of the commonly available drugs with the pluses and minus' of them. Symptoms are well written about and nicely the book does tell it how it is. No dramitics about getting off the mountain and indeed it is geared to helping you get to the top safely. As a novice high altitude climber I found the information extremely useful and possibly one of the best aspects of the book is that is is small enough to genuinely put in your back pocket as a referece which means you can take it with you easily.

4.0 out of 5 stars portable and clear, 14 Oct 2008
There is a huge amount of sensible and disgestible information in this tiny book. The good doctor has spent a long time at altitude himself, including in the Himalayas and so his advice is based on experience. There are a couple of places where his statements are his opinions rather than medical evidence but I agree that this clever little book could save lives. Recommended.
