5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the small-scale soapmaker, 7 May 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Essentially Soap: The Elegant Art of Handmade Soap Making, Scenting, Coloring and Shaping (Paperback)
Bob has written an excellent book on small scale soapmaking. He includes a great deal of technical information that is missing from most other books of this kind, but it is written in a style that the non-technically minded can understand and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent soap making book., 29 Jan 2010
By Woodwalker (Hampshire, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Essentially Soap: The Elegant Art of Handmade Soap Making, Scenting, Coloring and Shaping (Paperback)
I find that no book has everything you need, but this is one I couldn't be without. I have many, many books on soap making, and in my opinion this is among the top 3, along with Cavitches "The Soapmaker's Companion" (good for information about the best natural products to use and for basic information) and Coss's "The Handmade Soap Book" (approachable, with good recipes and lovely pictures).

This book is wonderful once you have made a couple of batches. The tone is friendly and knowledgeable, which is useful when McDaniel discusses the chemistry in more depth than others. His section on fragrance is outstanding, with many lovely essential oil fragrance recipes that are a very useful starting point when you are feeling a little wary of wasting your expensive oils. His section on alternative base oils and how to use them is helpful, and he gives step by step instructions on how to make soap.

It is the hints and tips that are most useful, though. For instance, when I was a beginner I would agonise over what "trace" was, but his explantaion that it is like a sauce emulsifying and will have the consistancy of custard reassured me enough to try. Now, as a soapmaker of several years experience I still refer to this book. For example, did you know that the perfect INS value for a bar of soap is 160? This is explained in depth and has revolutionised my own recipes. No other book told me this, but it is the single most useful peice of information I have ever had about soap making. I love the "six soapmaking secrets" section, as it is encouraging and inspires you to even enjoy your mistakes.

On the down side, this book does not have many glossy pictures like some, has an American bias and covers synthetic as well as natural ingredients, which is of less interest to me, but I still love it and would recommend it to anyone.
