Product Description

Ahmed grows up in a small Saudi village steeped in traditional tribal culture, local legends, family ties, history, and tribal songs. As he becomes a man, the cataclysmic changes of modernity spring up around him. Islam is imposing itself more and more strongly on tribal beliefs; moreover, the city begins to seem strangely attractive to his young mind. Ahmed struggles to come to terms with this newly unfolding world without forsaking his village, family or Hizam, the old man who comes to epitomise the traditional life itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Story to Village Life, 29 Oct 2009
By Sofia (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
This is a beautiful little book! Abodehman's novel is a largely autobiographical account of growing up in a small, fiercely tribal village in Saudi Arabia. It is a love song to the rituals and traditions of village life and a lament over the gradual erosion of tribal customs in the name of modernisation.

Abodehman describes himself in the novel as the village bard and the truth of that is apparent in the beauty of the writing (even in translation from the original French). The characters are vividly and engagingly drawn and Abodehman goes to great lengths to bring to life a world that is rapidly disappearing. It's a true little gem and I whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone seeking a less conventional view of Saudi Arabian life.
