Product Description

Product Description

These writings by Kung Fu master Adam Hsu were originally monthly magazine columns that aimed to correct the many misconceptions about Kung Fu in films, books, and in the words of errant teachers. The book is divided into eight themed sections, covering foundations, concepts, principles, styles and forms, usage, training, the future of kung fu, and its place in our lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Valuable Kung Fu book I've Ever Read, 9 Jun 2003
By Dom (Kent, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I wish I'd had this book six years ago.

I've been studying kung fu for five years, now.

I found a good teacher by sheer dumb luck, so not having this book didn't deprive me of that. Having it, however, would have alleviated any doubts I may have had in the early months, or answered some of those questions that I was afraid to ask.

The book's real value would have been in helping me to grasp the subtle, often unfamiliar concepts which shape the essence of true kung fu. Even at this stage of my learning, the author's clarity of language and judicious use of everyday analogies have been helpful to me in grasping and applying these nebulous ideas.

The book also strips away much of the pretence, smokescreen and confusion commonly encountered in the kung fu/martial art world, enabling the reader to focus on those aspects of kung fu which will deliver real benefit: physical and mental development, application and attitude.

Those who are just beginning kung fu will get the greatest benefit from this book, although they may not realise it for a while. The next are those who have been training for a while and may have developed some bad habits, or missed some important learns (I count myself in this group). Finally, those accomplished students who are beginning to teach, may find that this book provides a useful manifesto for kung fu and serves as a bridge between eastern and western culture in the teaching of it.

Even if you're not involved in kung fu (yet) I believe that this book will be of interest to anyone who has enjoyed a film containing kung fu, who was impressed by a display or a lion dance or who would like to absorb a little of the Chinese culture, other than the food.

Finally, those about to start any other martial art, such as kickboxing, karate, taekwondo, etc. or practitioners who have come to realise the limitations of these arts for real fighting, may find themselves reconsidering their own choice of style.

4.0 out of 5 stars Essential in order to follow the true path., 24 Nov 2001
When people think of Kung Fu they immediately think of Shaolin Monks, thanks to media and film you cant really blame the public for jumping to the conclusion that Kung Fu originated from the Shaolin Temple in Henan Province China. This book will clear up any misconceptions that you may have surrounding Kung Fu and its origin, it will also give you a better understanding as a martial artist as to what the bigger picture is. I would suggest that this book is not only a must read for the aspiring Chinese martial artist but also to anyone who wnats to gain a better understanding of the philosophy and health benefits behind Chinese martial arts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! A must-read for the serious kung-fu practioner!, 23 Nov 1998
By A Customer
Along with Bok Nam Park's books, Mr. Hsu has written the one of the best source guide on Chinese martial arts that I have ever read. A collection of columns written for a magazine, Mr. Hsu writes with clarity, precision, history, and passion. Mr. Adam Hsu is a world-renowned teacher of Chinese martial arts systems. He is best known for publicly disseminating the Bajiquan and Piguazhang systems to the public, as well as his high level of attainment in the Yin-Fu lineage of Baguazhang. In this slender volume, Mr. Hsu (since I am not his student, I may not refer to him as "Sifu") brings forth the philosophies and theory surrounding the most popular but least-understood family of martial arts in the West. There are no forms in this text; rather, it is a well-thought-out compilation of articles that will benefit all levels of Chinese martial artists. In fact, it has a thing or two to teach non-Chinese martial arts practitioners, as well. For anyone who cares to put a little thought into things, this is the book.
