The Most Valuable Kung Fu book I've Ever Read, 9 Jun 2003
I wish I'd had this book six years ago.I've been studying kung fu for five years, now. I found a good teacher by sheer dumb luck, so not having this book didn't deprive me of that. Having it, however, would have alleviated any doubts I may have had in the early months, or answered some of those questions that I was afraid to ask. The book's real value would have been in helping me to grasp the subtle, often unfamiliar concepts which shape the essence of true kung fu. Even at this stage of my learning, the author's clarity of language and judicious use of everyday analogies have been helpful to me in grasping and applying these nebulous ideas. The book also strips away much of the pretence, smokescreen and confusion commonly encountered in the kung fu/martial art world, enabling the reader to focus on those aspects of kung fu which will deliver real benefit: physical and mental development, application and attitude. Those who are just beginning kung fu will get the greatest benefit from this book, although they may not realise it for a while. The next are those who have been training for a while and may have developed some bad habits, or missed some important learns (I count myself in this group). Finally, those accomplished students who are beginning to teach, may find that this book provides a useful manifesto for kung fu and serves as a bridge between eastern and western culture in the teaching of it. Even if you're not involved in kung fu (yet) I believe that this book will be of interest to anyone who has enjoyed a film containing kung fu, who was impressed by a display or a lion dance or who would like to absorb a little of the Chinese culture, other than the food. Finally, those about to start any other martial art, such as kickboxing, karate, taekwondo, etc. or practitioners who have come to realise the limitations of these arts for real fighting, may find themselves reconsidering their own choice of style.
