Product Description

Product Description

"The National Geographic Traveler: Madrid" offers a comprehensive portrait of the city, covering not only the history, culture and sites to visit, but also the flavour and texture of the place. This guide includes numerous full-spread, mapped-out walking and driving tours, three-dimensional illustrations, and a large section of detailed information for visitors. Spain's vibrant capital city is buzzing with energy - from its lively arts and music scene to new and renovated museums. There is no better guide than the "National Geographic Traveler: Madrid" to show you around. Veteran travel writer and Madrid authority, Annie Bennett takes you to the 'must-see' attractions such as the newly refurbished Museo del Prado with its masterpieces of European art and also Las Ventas, the mecca of bullfighting. Bennett makes sure you don't miss out on the hidden gems as well, including a visit to Goya's tomb and shopping at Rastro's flea markets. Each chapter is dedicated to a particular neighbourhood, beginning with the bustling ancient core around Plaza Major and the Old Town, then working its way out to the Royal Palace and Opera District and beyond. Sprinkled throughout you'll find special features on historical and cultural topics (flamenco, the secret to making the best paella); mapped walking tours (a stroll around Plaza Major); and three-dimensional artwork of key sites of architectural interest. Vivid, specially commissioned photographs by acclaimed Spanish photographer Tino Soriano provide a fabulous sense of place, and maps designed by The National Geographic assure you'll always find your way. An extensive chapter on Madrid's culture and history primes you for your journey, combined with detailed information on where to find the best hotels and restaurants once you arrive.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thorough with some practical omissions, 21 Sep 2008
By Laurence Koster (York, England) - See all my reviews

This is a thoroughly comprehensive guide to Madrid with excellent photography.

It is organised in sections which each deal with a different part of Madrid.

I would have liked a recommendation for the top ten highlights of the city, or a suggested weekend itinerary. One glaring practical omission is that the opening times of the museums are not given anywhere in the book. Also, some places are difficult to find. For example, the Chocolatería San Ginés is recommended on page 83 as the best-known place for churros, but it doesn't say where it is! I tried to get to the Populart Jazz bar on page 263 but the address in the book is wrong (it's number 24, not number 2).

It would make more sense to give the price indications in euros instead of dollars. Some places, e.g. the royal palace, are cheaper for Europeans than for other nationalities. Also, it would be nice to have a handy list of museums which are free on Sundays.

On the public transport front, a bus map wouldn't go amiss, along with indications of how long the metro takes from the city centre to the airport, for example.

The index could include entries for some of the major underground stations, so that you could easily find attractions near them. There is no index entry for Teleférico or for churros!

All in all though, a very good book.
