My main reason for buying this book was to prepare for the CompTIA Security+ exam. With the rise in prominence of security issues in IT, this exam seems a good foundation on which to build detailed security knowledge.

The content of the book is aligned well with the actual exam. There is a useful assesment test at the start of the book which enables you to gauge your knowledge level and indicates the chapters of the book that will help with your weaker areas.

Each chapter contains just enough technical information and gives good descriptions of the technology areas you need to know about for the exam. There is a test at the end of each chapter and a "Key Terms" section containing key terms (funnily enough ;-) ) that you will encounter in the exam. The bonus exams on the CD are really useful as are the flash cards.

I have 7 years industry experience and used this book to brush up on my weaker areas. I passed the exam first time. If I hadn't used the book I think it would have been "touch and go". The book's test questions do well in preparing you for the exam.

The book is still an excellent resource even if you are not intent on taking the exam. It covers all aspects of security from Firewalls to Fire Suppression and DDOS attacks to Documentation.

I would recommend this book, exam or no exam.

I bought this book as I was doing the MSCA, and the Security+ was part of it.

This book is quite comprehensive, and better that the Microsoft course materials, which surprise suprise is very MS orientated.

I had done my network+ using Sybex and then I bought this one as I liked the layout of Sybex. Covers the exam objectives in depth in places and not so much in depth in other areas. I passed on my second go as it didn't cover all the points in depth. It won't be enough to pass the current exam. For example - It doesn't include anything on 'piggybacking'in terms of social engineering at all. Doesn't cover information on all the ports in depth. etc etc I would recommend the syngress text instead.
Remember the pass mark is 83% and the book is only good enough to get 75% of it if you are fresh to I.T.
