5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction, 15 Oct 2006
By English Bob (London UK) - See all my reviews
I have tried quite a few times to learn programming languages from books, but never manage to get past the first chapter.

This book is excellent. The instructions are short and easy to follow. You don't have to wade through lots of text to get things done. The book shows how to complete things (such as displaying data from tables) in different ways, either visually or by writing code.

At the end you have completed a fictional shopping site. The lessons can be applied though to other types of site. I often refer back to single chapters to help with different projects.

If you are just starting out, or need to learn ASP.NET2.0 in a hurry this book is a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for knowledgeable beginners, 28 Feb 2008
By Mr. Paul Millennas (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As a occasional self-taught author of ASP 2.0 apps, I was aware that I have left it a bit late to learn ASP.Net. I ordered two thick reference books and this as a starter.

Using VWD, the reader is led through the steps of making a complete application. The amount of VB.Net code would please Goldilocks : not too much nor too little.

If you are new to ASP.Net, you must also allow time to learn and understand the development tools. This book covers the free Microsoft Visual Web Developer, included on a CD.

The book attends to not just how to make the ASP.Net objects work but the bigger picture of how it all should work together. It showed that, with understanding, a robust application could be written with a relatively small amount of code.

The book does not cover code examples in C, nor Visual Studio.

A bonus for me was a chapter taking the time to explain the writing and uses of classes in web applications.

I did not understand everything the first time that I read it through, as there was a lot to learn. However, I intend to read it through again.

A first class read and a great investment!

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, 14 Nov 2008
By JJ (UK) - See all my reviews
Have used a number of WROX publications previously, mainly for MS Access, MS Excel and VBA, and found them very good. This one I had to abandon before the end of Chapter 1 because of all the errors that made following the example web site all but impossible.
