5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners., 7 May 2006
By J. James "The Bee Keeper" (Birmingham, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am very new to C# and as soon as I started out with the new Visual Express version I knew that I needed a good refference tool to help me develop my knowledge. 'Beginning Visual C# 2005' is excellent, packed with information for beginners and great for those moving over to C# from VB etc. The terminology can take a little getting used, especially for those of us without computer science degrees, but as you work through the book the concepts raised soon slot into place, especially if you try out all the examples along the way.
The examples are a plus point as they all work(as of 07/05/06), I was very glad of that because I have had books in the past where there have been really bad coding errors mostly due to spelling and typo errors, so far none found in this book.

The book is ideally aimed at those with Visual Studio, but the refferences to visual studio can be crossed over to Visual Express in most cases, there are very few parts that are Visual Studio only.(Class diagram explorer)

For those wishing to rush out and type their first C# game will not find information on game engine building in this book, however the book does provide a firm grounding on the fundementals of C#. One should learn to walk before learning to run so to speak.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very quick overview, 31 Jan 2006
I'm new to .net having come from Visual FoxPro and I must say this is a great introduction for a fairly experienced programmer and it recovers some ground in excellent detail. It is split into sections so you can pick and choose which areas to look at next, but makes more sense as a cover to cover read.

I am thoroughly enjoying using this book and I recommend it to anyone who wants to get serious about learning C#, with good example code, very detailed descriptions and logical explanations to concepts and the .net framework.

I have about 3 books all at the introductory level for existing programmers, this is by far the best one I have read so far.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, 6 Mar 2007
By Mr. F. Dama "Faz" (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this book a few weeks ago and even though I am not near finishing the book (1000+ pages!) I am impressed so far. Its logical, easy to understand for beginners and covers most of what is needed. When you finish you shoud move on the 'Professional Visual C# 2005 book by the same publishers as is recommended.

I did not give it full marks as there are a few errors in the code samples which I have not come accross but are listed in the errata section of the book's website. I believe that a technical book like this should not have any errors that may mislead readers.

I recommend this book for any beginner ( with programming experience or not) who wants to learn C# in the Visual Studio.Net environment.
